The upcoming third edition of the Khelo India University Games (KIUG) is scheduled to commence on May 25, 2023, in Uttar Pradesh. The event will kick start with an opening ceremony in Lucknow and will conclude on June 3 in Varanasi. Around 4,000 athletes, all under 27 years of age, representing various institutions will participate in the 21 sports and compete for medals.
The event will be held across four cities in Uttar Pradesh and 12 of these events will be held at eight venues in Lucknow – judo, volleyball, badminton, table tennis, rugby, athletics and fencing being a few among them. Swimming, kabaddi, basketball, weightlifting and boxing will take place in Gautam Buddha Nagar, and yogasana and wrestling will take place in Varanasi. The sport of Rowing, which is being included in the KIUG, will take place at the Water Sports Complex in Gorakhpur. Additionally, the Shooting competition will take place in New Delhi. Some other events will also start on May 24.
Navneet Sehgal, the Additional Chief Secretary of the Department of Sports and Youth Welfare, Government of Uttar Pradesh, expressed his delight at the growing popularity of the Khelo India movement and eagerly awaits the arrival of athletes from all over India to participate in the event. He stated,
“We are very pleased with the strong momentum the Khelo India movement continues to experience and we are looking forward to welcoming athletes from all over the country to Uttar Pradesh”
On Monday, UP Chief Secretary Durga Shankar Mishra revealed that a launch ceremony will be held on May 5 at Indira Gandhi Pratishthan to unveil the mascot, logo, and anthem of the upcoming Khelo India University Games.
