The Sports Authority of India (SAI) has cleared names of 734 young athletes for a scholarship programme under Khelo India Talent Identification Development scheme for development of sports in the country.
What is the Khelo India Scholarship all about?
The committee formed to look into this matter, approved the names of the athletes said that the scholarship program is designed to take care of the expenses of the players.
The selected athletes after their selection would be eligible for an annual (yearly) stipend of Rs. 1.2 lakhs, but on quarterly basis to meet their expenses related to treating injuries and also smaller elements like local travel.
The high power committee of Khelo India also took major step in the direction of growth of sports. In doing so, various private, State and SAI academies have been accredited along with 21 non-SAI academies.
The end goal is to develop more of such academies so that young athletes can get access to the best training without having to go at far off centers. These accredited academies will look after the training, boarding and tournament expenses of the inducted athletes.
Another major decision was that the academies will be divided into three categories. Plus, to encourage excellence, there will be a gap analysis that will provide the academies an opportunity for upgradation.
However, after these proposals are passed there will be a strong review mechanism for the said academies on a timely basis. Academies that do not maintain desired standards and fulfil the performance criteria might be delisted.
Also, the new trainees who don’t comply with the requisite standards, can also be weeded out from the academies.
