Keeping up with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision to develop a fit India, the first ever Khelo India Games begin today. This Government of India initiative will help scout young talent from the schools in various sports disciplines and groom them as future sports champions.
The Indian Prime Minister will launch the first Khelo India School Games at Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium in New Delhi today.
The first ever school games is a week-long event that will take place between 31 January and 8 February.
Khelo India Games – Overall development through Sports
The importance of sports and fitness in one’s life is irreplaceable. Playing sports indoctrinates team spirit, develops strategic and analytical thinking, leadership skills, goal setting and risk taking. A fit and healthy individual leads to an equally healthy society and strong nation.
Sports as an activity, is an extremely important component for the overall development of our nation and its people. India, in the last few years has made steady progress in the field of sports. However, tremendous potential needs to be showcased to win at global platform. It’s high time we inspire young talent and provide them top-notch infrastructure and training of the highest level. If India has to be developed as a sporting nation, we need to inculcate a strong spirit of participation in sports that enables athletes to demonstrate their true potential. Only then can India realise its dream of becoming a sports super power.
The Khelo India program has been introduced to revive the sports culture in India at the grass-root level by building a strong framework for all sports played in our country and establish India as a great sporting nation.
Talented players identified in priority sports disciplines at various levels by the High-Powered Committee will be provided annual financial assistance of INR 5 lakh per annum for 8 years.
Khelo India Games – Promoting a sports ecosystem
Khelo India Games is a part of the revamped National Programme for development of sports, which is now called Khelo India. It aims at strengthening the ecosystem by promoting the twin objectives of mass participation and promotion of excellence in sports. The Khelo India School Games will act as an avenue for identification of budding sports talent in specific disciplines.
Khelo India School Games will be annual competitions held in collaboration with the School Games Federation of India (SGFI) and the National Sports Federations (NSFs). The SGFI and NSFs will draw up and conduct an annual calendar of competitions at the lower level in the run-up to the Khelo India School Games at the National level.-- Advertisement --
However, the main aim of the Khelo India program and games is to revive the sports development initiatives in India at the grass-root level by building a strong framework for all sports played in the country and establishing India as a great sporting nation.
Khelo India Games – Young Athletes take the pledge
The Khelo India games pledge, launched by the Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Sport, Col.(Retired) Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore, has now crossed the one-million mark. Earlier, the hugely successful launch of the Khelo India Anthem, reached more than 200 million fans within two days of its launch.
The Khelo India pledge, now taken by more than 1.1 million people, is among the initiatives to popularise the games, which seeks to identify sportspersons at a very young age and develop them into future champions for India on international platforms. The Khelo India pledge aims to invoke the nation’s sporting spirit by urging fans and followers to support and encourage sports in every way possible. It is India’s pledge to become part of a revolution that will find nation’s budding sport talent from the grassroots and offer them a platform to rise and shine at the global level.
Khelo India Games – About the Program
The ‘Khelo India’ program was launched by former Sports Minister Vijay Goel, however it was later revamped by his successor, for Olympic medallist Rajyavardhan Rathore. The Khelo India games will be held at multiple venues in Delhi. The Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium and Indira Gandhi Stadium Complex are among the venues where the games will be held.
The school games encompass 16 sports disciplines such as Archery, Athletics, Badminton, Basketball, Boxing, Football, Gymnastics, Hockey, Judo, Kabaddi, Kho-Kho, Shooting, Swimming, Volleyball, Weightlifting and Wrestling.
The opening ceremony of the programme will be held in the national capital today (January 31) and the program will conclude on February 8.
