Autism Spectrum Disorder Girl finished 21 km solo swimming

Fourteen-year-old Autism Spectrum Disorder girl Jiya Rai, finished a 21 km solo swimming feat in a Puneet Sagar Abhiyan dedicated event, from Belapur to Gateway of India in 4 hours and 4 minutes on 26 February 2023.

The swimming event dedicated to the “Puneet Sagar Abhiyan”, is a GOI initiative to clean Sea Shore, and beaches including rivers. The Indian Navy (WNC) provided support to Jiya Rai by clearing the swimming route. Meanwhile, the National Cadet Corps (NCC) played a crucial role in mentoring her.

The swim commenced at the Belapur jetty at 05:07 am on 26 February 2023. It concluded at Gateway of India after 4 hours and 4 minutes at 09:11 am. Swimming in the dark hours of the dawn is difficult for any swimmer. However, Jiya’s determination and hard work lead her way toward success.

At the end of December 2022, Jiya participated in the world’s longest open water sea swimming relay over a distance of 1,100 Km. Jiya was the youngest and sole female participant in the team. She has also received several international and national awards. This includes the prestigious Pradhan Mantri (PM) Rashtriya Bal Puraskar 2022 and the Shriver-Kennedy Student Achievement Award (USA).

Jiya Rai, the daughter of Madan Rai, Master Chief-at-Arms II in the Indian Navy, was felicitated by Maj Gen YP Khanduri, ADG NCC, on 28 February 2023 at NCC Directorate, Mumbai.
