ISSF World Cup: Sarabjot Singh clinched Air Pistol Gold, Varun Tomar bagged Bronze

India shooter Sarabjot Singh clinched the men’s air pistol gold in the ISSF Pistol/Rifle World Cup 2023 to open the host country’s medal account on the first day of the event (Wednesday) in Bhopal. Meanwhile, teenage shooter Varun Tomar also bagged a bronze to add a cherry on top.

The 21-year-old Sarabjot was in sublime form, as he emerged as the champion at the end of the qualification round with 585 points. Sarabjot was hitting the bull’s eye every time he aimed. His scores of 98, 97, 99, 97, 97, and 97 in the six qualification series suggested that he would be hard to beat.

In the ranking or elimination round, Sarabjot kept up his good form. Meanwhile, 19-year-old Varun, after finishing eighth and last, began his superb recovery.

At the end of the ranking stage, Sarabjot (253.2 points) and Ruslan (251.9) finished first and second respectively. Both the shooters entered the gold-medal round. The gold-medal match was a thriller race to 16 points, and unstoppable Sarabjot clinched the title, winning 16-0 over Azerbaijan’s Ruslan Lunev.

“When I was leading 10-0, it started playing on my mind that I can win 16-0.”

Meanwhile, Varun scored 250.3 and bagged the bronze.
