It was a happy ending afterall for Manu Bhaker and Saurabh Chaudhary as India’s campaign at the ISSF World Cup culminated on a high note with a gold medal.
The yellow metal, the host’s third, came after the duo finished top in the 10m air pistol mixed team final with a score of 483.4 points on tournament’s final day of the on Wednesday.
India did not get the best of starts to the final, taking the second spot with 99.1 points and trailing the Republic of Korea after the initial string of shots.
As the Manu managed to have only one shot over 10, it was Saurabh who made up for it with 3 shots above 10.
Manu had a better 2nd series with the scores 10.3, 10.4, 10.5, 10.3 and 9.8. The 16-year old Saurabh, on the other hand, went above 10 in all the 5 shots. However, Korea, continued to maintain their lead. Nonetheless, both the parties ended up with the same score.
The final’s 3rd series witnessed the Indian pair score a 99.4, edge past Korea’s score. However, they still remained in the second spot.
The talented teenage pair showed their mettle in the fourth series, taking the lead and staying clear of elimination until the very end.
Manu and Saurabh finished the final at the top with a comfortable lead of 5.7 points over the second-placed Chinese.
The Indian duo had previously equalled the Qualification World Record whole also setting a new Qualification World Record for the Junior by shooting a massive 778 points. The other participating Indian pair of Abhishek Verma and Heena Sidhu couldn’t qualify for the final. They could manage to shoot only a total of 770 points.
As a result of the final day gold, India end the tournament on a high with three medals. All gold.
India’s Performance in ISSF World Cup, New Delhi
Earlier in the tournament, it was Apurvi Chandela who set a new world record in the women’s 10m air rifle event with 252.9 points. As a result she also clinched her third individual World Cup medal on Saturday. Saurabh Chaudhary then doubled India’s gold tally in style by breaking another the World Record in the 10m Air Pistol event. The 245.0 points haul that he managed on the second day of the tournament also ensured an Olympic quota for him.
