Brown will replace former Real Madrid technical director Miguel Angel Portugal

Indian Super League (ISL) franchise FC Pune City have chosen to secure the services of English manager Philip Brown as their head coach for the remainder of the 2018-19 season. The club made the imminent announcement on Monday.

The side that is co-owned by Arjun Kapoor had earlier sacked manager Miguel Angel Portugal after just three games into the fifth season of ISL. The Spaniard had a solitary point to show for that led to his ouster. It was the Interim manager Pradhyum Reddy that had guided the Maharashtrian team to the seventh position in the league after scalping 11 points off 12 games before entering the winter break.

Their new manager, Phil Brown comes in with tons of experience, mostly managing English sides. He was most recently managing English fourth division side Swindon Town up until November. However, he was sacked by the Wiltshire club when his side managed the team to managed to pick up just 5 wins from 17 games which saw them languish in the 17th spot in the table resulting in fear of relegation to a non-league status.

However, Brown will only have 6 games to make an impression once the league resumes in late January after the conclusion of the Indian national team’s commitments at the 2019 AFC Asian Cup. The 59-year-old manager is also expected to oversee the Stallions’ run in the Super Cup which is scheduled to be held between March and April.

Brown had started his managerial journey in England in 1999. Before that, he played across a slew of English clubs like Bolton Wanderers and Blackpool among others in a career spanning over 18 years. His first stint as a manager was as an assistant coach with Blackpool. It was in 2006 when the Englishman took the reign at Hull City. Under his stewardship, the club went on to win the Championship in 2008. That triumph saw the club earn a promotion to Premier League for the first time ever in their 104-year history.

Then in 2013, Brown joined Southend United in League 2. In his 5 years at the club, the team managed to qualify for playoffs on three occasions and even won promotion to League 1.

Speaking on the club’s new acquisition, Pune City CEO Gaurav Modwel said, “Phil has extensive experience of playing as well as a manager with a has a proven track record in England. His successful stint at Hull City, getting their promotion to Premier League was historic and says a lot about his calibre as a manager. We welcome him to FC Pune City family and look forward to making most of the rest of our season.”
