In match 20 of the Indian Super League defending champions, Bengaluru FC secured a comfortable 3-0 victory over Chennaiyin FC at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium in Bengaluru. The Blues continued their undefeated start to the season and secured their first victory of the season.

Chennaiyin FC, on the other hand, continued their dismal performance since the last campaign and haven’t managed to score a single goal since 7 ISL games.

David vs Goliath

The Blues were favorites going into the game against Chennaiyin on Sunday night. Bengaluru started the game with a 4-2-3-1 formation while Chennaiyin played a 4-4-2 diamond for the night.

Bengaluru FC kicked off the match at their home ground. In the opening 11 minutes of the game, they had created 4 goal-scoring opportunities, with two of them being saved by the keeper and the other two just wide of the goal.

Their relentless attacking in the opening minutes finally came fruitful for the Blues. In the 13th minute, they were won a corner which was brilliantly delivered by Dimas Delgado and headed goal-wards in perfection by Erik Paartalu who made his first start of the season.

In the 24th minute, an inch-perfect pass found Sunil Chhetri who was making a searching run and had 2 defenders chasing him. The Indian legend let the ball run ahead of him for a few yards before launching a thunderous strike which the goalkeeper had no chance to save. With his strike, Chhetri registered his first goal of the season and doubled the Blues league on the night.

Minutes later after scoring their 2nd goal, Bengaluru had the chance of scoring their 3rd of the night, however, the visitors managed to get the ball out of the danger zone after some panicky defending. The next 20 minutes remained event-less and the first half came to an end with the home side leading comfortably by 2 goals.

In the opening few minutes of the 2nd half, Chennaiyin had a couple of chances to score their first goal, however lady luck wasn’t on their side on Sunday night either.

In the 74th minute, Sunil Chhetri was booked for simulating a dive, which was clearly not the case as the striker was clearly brought down in the penalty box and denied a clear penalty.

With 7 minutes left in the game, Semboi Hokip came off the bench to nudge the ball between the Chennaiyin keepers legs, registering the 3rd goal for the Blues on the night. It could have been 4 for the Blues, however, Chhetri’s attempt was just wide of the goal.

In the 3 added minutes, Chennaiyin could have had a consolation goal, however, the headed effort hit the roof of the net and the match came to an end.

Bengaluru FC moved up to 4th in the table without having lost a single game this season. The pressure was piled on the 2-time champions Chennaiyin FC who are now 10th in the league and haven’t scored a single goal in the last 7 games.

The ISL and other football leagues are now heading into the international break. The next game of the Indian Super League will be played on 23rd November which will feature Bengaluru FC who will host Kerala Blasters FC.
