  • Hyderabad FC was defeated by NorthEast United FC by a narrow 1-0 margin.
  • Barreiro scored the only goal of the night after the Highlanders were awarded a penalty 5 minutes before the final whistle.
  • NorthEast United go top of the league without having lost a single match this season, while Hyderabad suffered their 3rd defeat this season.

The 16th match of the Indian Super League saw Hyderabad FC suffer a narrow 1-0 defeat at the hands of NorthEast United FC. This was the newcomers’ 3rd setback of the season. The Highlanders, on the other hand, are still unbeaten in the league. With their win, NorthEast now sit on top of the ISL.

Frustrating night for Hyderabad

Hyderabad was going into this game hoping to extend their winning run on the home ground. They started the match brightly by registering their first shot of the night in the 4th minute taken by Marcelino, which was saved by the northeast keeper by inches.

They had another shot in the 24th minute which went just wide of the top post. And in the 28th minute, they registered another shot which was right in the goalkeeper’s glove.

By the end of the first half, it looked like Hyderabad FC could come back stronger in the next half as NorthEast had only made one attempt at getting a goal.

However, it was the visitors who started the 2nd half brightly just seconds after the kickoff after Milan Singh got a through ball which was eventually saved by Kamaljit Singh.

Both the sides were creating equal opportunities to go ahead. A venomous strike from Rohit Kumar was halfheartedly saved by Subhasish Roy denying the home side the breakthrough.

In the 84th minute, the NorthEast captain Jose Leudo made an attempt to shoot the ball goal-wards. However, it hit the hands of Shankar Sampingraj who tried to head it away but he was unable to move his hand in time hence conceding a penalty.

Barreiro was the man to step up for taking the penalty. He breathed a huge sigh before taking the shot, pausing for a second before striking the ball which sent the goalkeeper the wrong side and ensured Barreiro of the winning goal of the night. With his strike, Maximiliano Barreiro was awarded the hero of the match and sent his team on the top of the table without having lost a single game.

It was a rather disappointing night for Hyderabad who lost their 3rd game of the season.

Statistically, the match was very evenly tied. Both the sides registered 358 passes each. Hyderabad had taken 4 more shots on goal than their rivals of the night, however, they had 3 shots on goal each. NorthEast also had a slight edge as they maintained a 51% possession vs Hyderabad’s 49%.
