During Rohit Sharma’s tenure as captain, Mumbai Indians cultivated a fierce competition against CSK, often contending for the IPL championship. Following the surprising announcement by MI, CSK took to Twitter on Thursday to recognize Rohit’s accomplishments. Their tweet read, “A decade of spirited challenge! Much respect, Rohit!” Accompanying the message was a photo capturing Dhoni shaking hands with Rohit.

The announcement put an end to the speculation regarding the franchise’s next leader, emerging after Pandya’s surprising trade to MI was confirmed post the deadline for teams to disclose their retained and released players. Pandya, debuting in the IPL in 2015, spent seven seasons under Rohit’s leadership at MI before transitioning to the Gujarat Titans in 2022. The influential all-rounder enjoyed two successful seasons with GT, clinching victory in IPL 2022 and guiding them to this year’s finals.

Rohit holds the position as the fourth-highest run scorer in IPL history, accumulating 6211 runs, out of which 3986 were secured while captaining. Across 157 innings, he maintained a strike rate of 129.37, achieving 25 fifties. Among IPL captains, Rohit’s tally ranks third, following Kohli’s 4994 runs and Dhoni’s 4660.
