In a major breakthrough, authorities have uncovered a betting racket masterminded by a group of techies and management graduates in Lucknow amid IPL 2023. The culprits, identified as Anand Swami (26), Shreyash Balsara (27) from Rajasthan, and Rohit Shivaj (20), Paras Magu (30), and Sumit Dahiya (25) hailing from Haryana, have been operating this illicit business for the past four years. The police successfully apprehended them in Lucknow’s Sushant Golf City Police area.
According to law enforcement officials, these individuals hold mid-level positions in private companies and assemble annually during the IPL season to execute their nefarious activities. Sumit Dahiya, the alleged mastermind, completed his BBA from a private university. Meanwhile, the other four members pursued BTech from different institutions.
Vineet Jaiswal, the DCP of South Zone stated after arresting them,
“We got information about this gang and based on surveillance busted them on May 17. The miscreants owned up to their crime and disclosed the modus operandi.”
Investigations reveal that the culprits downloaded a ‘Cricket Live App’ on their laptops to stream matches online in real-time. Recognizing that television broadcasts were delayed by several seconds, they utilized the app for instant updates.
Police reports indicate that the five individuals manipulated technicalities to amass substantial profits. They enticed people through phone calls and social media, encouraging them to place bets on matches by promising significant winnings. Moreover, they traveled to attend every game, with one member present inside the stadium while others operated the racket.
