As the matches are to be played behind closed doors due to the Covid protocols, Star Network intends to provide the viewers with the same atmosphere they would have experienced inside the stadiums. For that, Star Network is using the latest  “technological innovations”. Special emphasis is on new areas like fielding speed and stats, the reaction time of players, and the speed of running between the wickets.

In Conversation With Sanjog Gupta

“We usually do a lot of analysis for bowlers and batting, but very limited on fielding. One of the things we want to innovate this year is the assessment of fielding for players, for teams, and for differetnt phases during the game,” Sanjog Gupta (Head of sports, Star and Disney India) said.

“For example, the stats of catches… the number of catches a fielder takes and drops. How many runs does a fielder give and save both inside the 30-yard circle & the outfield. We are developing a matrix system that will help us evaluate the strengths, and weaknesses of a team based on their fielding standards.”

“We will also be focusing on the speed of the players between the wickets. Viewers will be able to know who is quickest between the wickets… Also, which pair runs the fastest between the wickets.”

To achieve this, Star Sports Networks is planning to install 32-36 cameras for each match. This consists of the buggy camera (which operates on a remote control vehicle and moves around the boundary line), a drone-installed camera, and the super slow motion and ultra motion cameras.

As the stands are empty, it gives us an opportunity to place the cameras at various places. It will help us catch and capture the action from different angles. The viewers will get a completely different perspective on the game which they hadn’t watched before.

Star Sports is also planning to organize an interactive session to keep the viewers engaged. “The interactive sessions will be between the viewers and commentators through social media feeds. They can ask questions to commentators related to the game.”

“Also, we have designed cheers and chants that viewers will get to hear at a stadium — the Dhoni chant or Kohli chant.”

Team KreedOn wishes all the very best to all the teams, players, franchises, and fans.

Have a happy cricket. Have a happy IPL 2021.
