In the 2019 transfer window, Sunrisers Hyderabad took a sensational decision of parting ways Shikhar Dhawan, who had been a mainstay in the opening department. Howbeit, the team from the south will be boosted by the arrival of another opener David Warner, who was absent in the last season. Another promising batsman that they have shown the door to is Wriddhiman Saha.
However, they have retained their core team of the player that took them to the finals of the 2018 IPL, where they lost to Chennai Super Kings. Although they look stable on paper, they will need some marquee signings, especially in the opening department.
With the 2019 IPL auction just around the corner, we look at the top 5 players that Sunrisers Hyderabad should sign to reach at the top of the table this season as well.
#1. Luke Ronchi
Luke Ronchi has been a name to reckon with some sublime performances in numerous T20 leagues around the world. The former New Zealand wicketkeeper can both open the batting while also being capable of playing in the middle order with equal finesse.-- Advertisement --
This year, Ronchi’s statistics display impressive strike rates and good averages. It goes without he could be shrewdly used opening or at the business end of the matches. The former New Zealand wicketkeeper is also well acquainted with Kane Williamson, helping the current captain to dovetail the Ronchi the way he wants.
The cherry on the cake is that Luke can also solve SRH’s wicketkeeping problems as well.
#2. Eoin Morgan
The England captain is expected to become a major target at the auction. And why not? He has scored over 5,500 runs in his extensive T20 career and thus possesses tons of experience. This can be vital for SRH, which sometimes tends to struggle in the middle order.
Morgan has also played extensively for a lot of T20 teams around the world and has a gamut of shots in his batting trove. Moreover, he has a great strike rate over the last 2 years. He could play an important role in build innings as well in finishing matches.
#3 . Manoj Tiwari
Manoj Tiwary is among one of the experienced Indians available at the IPL auctions. Traditionally, the technically sound middle-order batsman has been underrated. However, that does not change the fact that he played a pivotal role in the 2014 IPL triumph. Tiwary builds his innings patiently but can also be quite a dangerous batsman towards the end of the innings.
He has already scored 1,695 runs in 98 IPL matches and has a reasonable strike rate of 116.97 and an average of 28.72.
For SRH, Tiwary could stabilize the middle-order and provide a much-needed competition to Deepak Hooda and Yusuf Pathan in the starting XI.
#4. Alex Hales
Alex Hales is a natural aggressive stroke-playing opener. Playing for England, Hales has a knack for scoring big hits. This was evident from his 171-run blitz playing against Pakistan, helping England pile an ODI record total of 444. Over the years, Alex has developed a reputation of a T20 specialist, having already amassed more than 5,000 runs in the format.
In Hales, Sunrisers Hyderabad would get a world-class opener and an able replacement for the Shikhar Dhawan. He would form a formidable partnership with David Warner or play in his place if the Australian shows a drop in form after being out of the International scene for almost a year.
#5. Brendon McCullum
Over the years, Brendon McCullum has become an established name in the IPL circles. The veteran opener is known to provide his team with an aggressive start. Like Luke Ronchi, he could prove to be a vital addition in the opening department for SRH. The one thing that Brendon scores over his compatriot though is the experience. McCullum has been playing in the league for over 10 years now. During this extensive period, he has amassed 2,881 runs at a strike rate of 131.61.
Thus, if given more time, Brendon McCullum can do wonders for the SRH. At the very least, he could prove to be an able backup option for David Warner, since both the batsmen have a similar batting style.
