Indian Premier League franchise Delhi Daredevils will hereafter be known as Delhi Capitals, it was announced at a grand function in the city yesterday (December 4).

“We wanted this name to mean something to each and everyone from Delhi,” informed Parth Jindal, JSW Sports’ Director,  at the event.

“Our supporting staff has a knack of picking raw talent and moulding them. Sandeep Lamichhane is a fine example of that. This season we have Kaif too who has been a natural talent scout too in this country. Dhawan is a proven cricketer in IPL and he adds perfect experience to the motivated young core,” further added Jindal.

JSW Sports had acquired a 50% stake in the Delhi based franchise before the 2018 edition of the IPL.

Another important information that Jindal announced was that of Shreyas Iyer, who will be the Delhi Capitals captain in the upcoming IPL 2019.

The big announcement comes at a crucial time days before the much anticipated IPL 2019 auctions that will be held on December 18 in Jaipur. Delhi Capitals had controversially released former captain Gautam Gambhir in the transfer window to a significant social media outcry. Incidentally, Gambhir also announced his retirement from cricket yesterday.

Along with him, Delhi also released a host of other international stars including Glenn Maxwell, Jason Roy, and Liam Plunkett, in addition to the Indian paceman Mohammed Shami.

The indications are clear that Delhi is looking forward to making a fresh overhaul in the squad after years of underachievement. In fact, Delhi is the only franchise to not have reached the final after competing in all IPL editions.

This season, the franchise has traded as many as 4 players for Indian opener Shikhar Dhawan.

It was reported that the deal was facilitated over remuneration disagreement between Dhawan and Sunrisers Hyderabad last season.

At the function, Dhawan addressed the audience that he was happy to be back to his home city. He also added that he was looking forward to doing well in the upcoming season.

Other important updates made by the franchise was that of Mohammed Kaif who was named as the team’s assistant coach whereas Ricky Ponting continues to be the head coach of the team. Also present at the announcement, Kaif informed that he was eager to get started and that the team had a promising core that loved the game.
