  • It is also expected to discuss on whether to go ahead and bid for 2026 Commonwealth Games.

The Indian Olympic Association (IOA), in its annual general meeting, will take a final call on whether India would pull out of the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham on December 30. Also on the agenda will be to brainstorm on whether to approach the government to bid for the hosting rights of the 2026 Commonwealth Games.

IOA secretary general Rajeev Mehta said that the decision to approve or reject the proposal to bid for the 2026 Games’ hosting rights rested with the members.

“On our part, the intent (to bid for 2026 CWG) is a serious one. We need the approval of the General House before going to the government with the proposal to bid for the Games. Let us see what happens,” he told PTI.

Last month, Mehta had made public the association’s intention to bid for the Games, in president Narinder Batra and visiting Commonwealth Games CEO David Grevemberg and Federation president Louise Martin’s presence.

“We will first take approval from the general assembly of the IOA and then will approach the government. If the government allows, we can host the Games,” he had said.

Originally, the 2026 Games’ host city was to be selected during the 2019 CGF General Assembly in Rwanda’s Kigali. However, this was postponed to next year.

Earlier this year, Batra had announced the country’s decision to boycott the 2022 Games in protest to to the dropping of shooting. However, he had also confirmed that the final call was to be taken by the IOA General Assembly.

“We made the proposal [of withdrawal] six months back. We will take into consideration the discussions we had [with the CGF chief and CEO]. We will go back to the General Assembly and take a decision,” he had said.

The scope of the meeting also includes discussion on IOA’s bid to host the International Olympic Council session in 2023, India’s preparations for the Tokyo Olympics. It is also expected that discussions will be held on resolving the disputes related to certain National Sports Federations and draft National Sports Code (2017).
