IOA Sets Up One-bout Trial for Six Wrestlers as Asian Games & World Championship Approach

The IOA ad-hoc panel has introduced a new format for 6 protesting wrestlers ahead of the upcoming Asian Games and World Championship. Instead of going through the regular trials, these wrestlers, namely Vinesh Phogat, Bajrang Punia, Sakshi Malik, Sangeeta Phogat, Satywart Kadian, and Jitender Kinha, will participate in a one-bout competition against the winners of the trials.

If they manage to defeat the winners, they will secure their spots in the Indian teams for these prestigious events. This special arrangement grants the six wrestlers an exemption from the initial trials and assures them an opportunity to prove their worth between August 5 and 15.

In an intriguing turn of events, the wrestlers made a request to the Sports Ministry seeking permission to participate in the August Asian Games trials. Their plea stemmed from being inadequately prepared for the competition due to their prolonged protest against the outgoing WFI chief, Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, who is currently facing sexual harassment allegations.

Notably, esteemed wrestlers such as Bajrang and Vinesh have previously received exemptions from full trials by the WFI, aiming to safeguard them against potential injuries. However, this privilege had never been extended to wrestlers like Sangeeta Phogat, Satyawart Kadian, and Jitender Kinha in the past.

The ad-hoc panel is obligated to conduct the Asian Games trials prior to July 15, which marks the deadline for submitting the information of all Indian teams to the organizers.

Following the initial trials, the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) will be able to submit the names of the wrestlers to the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) within the July 15 cutoff. However, there remains a possibility for replacements to be made if the protesting wrestlers succeed in defeating the winners of the initial trials.
