India is preparing to compete for the opportunity to host the 2029 World Athletics Championships, abandoning its earlier intention to bid for the 2027 World Championships. The Athletics Federation of India (AFI) had initially contemplated vying for the hosting rights of the 2027 World Athletics Championships. However, recent information suggests that the AFI has reconsidered this plan and is now focusing on securing the hosting rights for the 2029 edition.
Anju Bobby George, the Senior Vice President of the Athletics Federation of India (AFI), conveyed to PTI during the AFI Annual General Body meeting:
“Yes, we are interested in bidding for the 2029 World Athletics Championships.”

In August, Neeraj Chopra, the Olympic Champion, asserted that India is prepared to submit a bid for hosting the 2027 World Athletics Championships. The formal bidding timeline for the 2029 edition of the championships is currently undisclosed. While the World Athletics initiated the bidding process for the 2027 World Athletics Championships earlier this year, there is no specified timeline available for the 2029 edition. Budapest, Hungary, hosted the most recent edition of the World Athletics Championships in August, with Tokyo slated to host the next edition in 2025.
