On Friday, Para swimmer of India, Niranjan Mukundan broke a 16-year-old Asian record en route to his 1500 freestyle gold in the S7 category at the Norwegian Swimming Championships 2023 which is also known as Bergen Swim Festival.
Niranjan Mukundan from Bangalore was the only participant in this event category and clocked 21.47.18 seconds. He broke the previous record of 22:01:22s set by Japan’s Jumpei Kimura in 2007.

Not only gold in 1500m freestyle, Mukundan also bagged gold medal in 50m backstroke and bronze in 100m freestyle event on the day.
Mukundan also etched a new NR in men’s 200m individual medley at the Para Swimming World Series in Sheffield in Great Britain, earlier in the year.
In the SM7 category, the 28-year-old swimmer had clocked a stunning 2:56.03s in the fourth heat.
Mukundan won his first international medal at the age of 18 and seven years later, he became the first Indian para swimmer to win 50 global medals for India. In 2015, he became the junior world champion.
