Ferran Corominas ensured that his team finished the ISL group stage campaign on a winning note
Ferran Corominas’ 26th-minute strike was the only separating point between the two sides as FC Goa managed to secure a 1-0 win over the bottom-placed Chennaiyin FC in the final league stage tie at the Jawaharlal Nehru stadium on Thursday.
As a result of the win, FC Goa’s points tally went up to 34 for the ongoing Indian Super League season, taking them on par with Bengaluru FC. However, the Gaurs will still remain in the second place thanks to an inferior head-to-head record in BFC’s comparison.
As both Bengaluru FC and FC Goa finished their league formalities, it is much clearer now that the duo will feature in their second-leg semifinal games at home on March 11 and 12 respectively.
The defeat also marked the 13th loss of the season for Chennaiyin FC. They have garnered only nine points from 18 games, the lowest points tally any ISL team has ever managed.
FC Goa demonstrated their dominance on the ball from the start, forcing Chennaiyin FC to sit back in numbers.
Although both the teams enjoyed several half chances, a goal continued to remain elusive. But sustained pressure did indeed bore fruit for the hosts. In the 26th minute, Ahmed Jahouh picked out Jackichand Singh’s run into the 18-yard box with a beautiful long ball.
The winger, in turn, cushioned the ball in Corominas’s path. The latter picked out his spot past a the Chennaiyin custodian Karanjit Singh to score his season’s 14th goal.

After the goal, nothing much changed, even after the break as well. The home side was content to decelerate the pace of the game by holding onto the ball. Except for a close chance in the 49th minute, they denied Chennaiyin any chance to recover.
Jeje Lalpekhlua was the one to have a fine go at the goal to restore any parity. However, his attempt on the goal was blazed well past the post.
Goa saw out the game with fair ease, inflicting 13th defeat of the season on Chennaiyin FC. The loss also meant that Chennaiyin remained rooted at the bottom of the Indian Super League.
