Lala Amarnath was a famous Indian cricketer who inspired many young players. He was the first Indian to score a century in Test cricket, He started his Test career amazingly, scoring 118 runs against England in Mumbai in 1933. After that, he played 23 more tests but never scored another century in his career again after that debut century. He finished his career with a total of 878 runs in 40 innings of the test matches.

Deepak Shodhan

Deepak Shodhan made a fantastic start to his cricket career when he played against Pakistan in 1952 at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata. In that match, he scored 110 runs in the second inning of the test match, and the game ended in a tie with help of his ton. He played two more matches after that and scored a total of 181 runs in four innings.

A.G. Kripal Singh

AG Kripal Singh hit his first-ever Test century against New Zealand in 1955 and remained unbeaten. Although he didn’t score another century after that, he did manage to score two half-centuries during his 14-test career for team India. His last match for India was in 1964. Throughout his career, he scored a total of 422 runs in 20 innings and took 10 wickets.

Abbas Ali Baig

Abbas Ali Baig was the youngest Indian cricketer to score a century in his first Test match. He achieved this when he was just 20 years and 126 days old while playing against England at Old Trafford in Manchester in 1959 in his first appearance for his country. Throughout his career, he scored a total of 428 runs in 18 innings, including one century and two fifties.

Hanumant Singh

Hanumant Singh was a talented Indian cricket player who had a rough time after starting off well with ton in his very first match in test cricket. He played a fantastic knock of 105 runs against England at Delhi’s Feroz Shah Kotla ground in 1964. That was his only time reaching a century in international matches. By the end of his career, he had played in 24 innings, scoring a total of 686 runs and achieving five half-centuries.

Gundappa Viswanath

The former Indian player, who was one of the finest Indian batters of his era, contributed for India in very important matches and secured victories for the Indian team. He joined the elite list after scoring a staggering ton on his debut match against Australia in Kanpur in 1969; he scored 137 runs in the second inning of the match, helping India draw the match. He represented India in 91 test matches and scored an overall 14 centuries and 35 half centuries while accumulating 6080 runs at an average of 41.93.

Surinder Amarnath

Surinder Amarnath, just like his legendary father Lala Amarnath, kicked off his Test cricket career impressively with a remarkable 124 runs in Auckland against New Zealand, during the 1976 tour. Throughout his career, he played 18 innings, accumulating a total of 550 runs with one century and three fifties.

Mohammad Azharuddin

Former Indian skipper Mohammad Azharuddin is also on our list because he also scored a test match century in his very first match against England in 1984. He played a brilliant knock of 110 in tough conditions, and he took 322 balls to reach the milestone. This hundred by the Indian former skipper showed his talent to the world, and he delivered his country well throughout his career. He was just one match away from playing 100 matches for India, as he played 99 test matches and scored 22 hundreds, and he also ended his career with a century. He scored 6215 runs in the format at an amazing average of 45.

Pravin Amre

Pravin Amre was one of the few Indian cricket players who made their first appearance in Test matches by scoring a century outside India. He played his first Test match against South Africa in Durban’s Kingsmead stadium in 1992, where he scored 103 runs. Although he played a total of 11 Test matches, he didn’t achieve the same level of success afterward. He managed to score three half-centuries and ended his Test career with a total of 425 runs.

Sourav Ganguly

The elegant left-hander and the man who changed Indian cricket, Sourav Ganguly is also on our list. On his test debut against England, he scored a top-notch century at Lords in 1996 in very tough conditions. He showed great skills, temperament, and technique in seaming conditions. He scored 131 runs on 301 balls. Later, he ended his career as the most successful skipper of Indian cricket and as a legend as well. He represented India in 113 test matches and scored 16 centuries. He led team India to many famous victories overseas with his sharp captaincy and with his batting also.


There were the top 10 batters who scored a century on their test debut, but there is a total of 17 Indians to achieve the feat, like Virender Sehwag, Rohit Sharma, Suresh Raina, Shikhar Dhawan, Shreyas Iyer, Prithvi Shaw, and Yashasvi Jaiswal.
