Icons like Milkha Singh and PT Usha endeavored to fulfill the dream of hearing the Indian national anthem at the track but could not achieve it. Mirabai Chanu – silver medal in women’s 49kg weightlifting
Indian Olympic Medal Winners 2020: The 26-year-old from Manipur kick-started India’s Tokyo Olympics campaign securing silverware in the women’s 49kg weightlifting event on the maiden day of the Games. She set a total weight of 202kg which was bettered by the gold medalist from China, Hou Zhihui with her Olympic record-breaking 210kg lift. The traditional rice dishes of Manipur have aided Mirabai in maintaining a great physique and on top of that, she followed a strict diet curbing her favorite pizzas in the months leading to Tokyo Olympics. In the end, all the sacrifice and hard work paid off for her, being India’s second weightlifting medal winner after the legendary Karnam Malleswari.
Ravi Kumar Dahiya – silver medal in men’s 57kg freestyle wrestling
Indian Olympic Medal Winners 2020: Nahri village situated in the Sonipat district of Haryana is a famous wrestling hub that has produced exceptional talents like Yogeshwar Dutt, the Phogat sisters, and Sushil Kumar. Ravi Kumar Dahiya hails from the same village and that obviously put great expectations on him heading to Tokyo Olympics 2020. The way he started his Olympic campaign was simply phenomenal, dominating the Colombian Oscar Tigreros and Georgi Vangelov of Bulgaria in the first two bouts respectively by technical superiority. In the semifinals against Nurislam Sanayev of Kazakhstan, he was trailing before winning the contest by fall in the last minute. Although he lost to Russia’s two-time world champion Zaur Uguev in the final bout, India and its people were already in love with the mighty Ravi Kumar.
PV Sindhu – bronze medal in women’s singles badminton
Indian Olympic Medal Winners 2020: To be very honest, no Indian expected anything less than a medal from PV Sindhu. The former Olympic silver medalist had the burden of pressure on her shoulders because of what she had achieved in the past. Arguably the most decorated Indian woman shuttler, Sindhu displayed her class in the group stages and the round of 16 decimating every opponent on her way. Until the quarter-final, none of the combatants stood a chance against her. However, the 26-year-old lost her momentum against the World No.1 Tai Tzu-Ying in the semi-finals and won the bronze medal match against He Bingjiao of China.
Lovlina Borgohain – bronze medal in women’s welterweight boxing
Indian Olympic Medal Winners 2020: Lovlina Borgohain was indeed a surprise medal earner for India in Tokyo 2020. Coming from a remote village named Baromukhia in Assam, she became the first Assamese pugilist to feature in Olympics. Her father worked at the paddy fields and Lovlina used to help him during the lockdown period. India’s boxing hopes were too much invested in the six-time World Champion MC Mary Kom and when she got eliminated, Lovlina stood up and held the hopes high in the welterweight event. In the semifinals after securing a medal for India, she lost to Busenaz Surmeneli of Turkey.
Bajrang Punia – bronze medal in men’s 65kg freestyle wrestling
Indian Olympic Medal Winners 2020: The 27-year-old wrestler from Haryana was one of the favorites to win an Olympic medal. Bajrang Punia is the only Indian to win three medals at the World Wrestling Championship. But the bouts weren’t easy for him at all. In the first match, he just edged past Kyrgyzstan’s Ernazar Akmataliev, with the scores tying at 3-3. Morteza Ghiasi Cheka of Iran was Bajrang’s second opponent. Ghiasi scored the first point of the match but Bajrang made an amazing comeback earning a two-pointer and pinned Ghiasi to the mat to win the contest by fall. After losing the semifinal against Haji Aliyev, the eventual silver medalist, Bajrang defeated Daulet Niyazbekov of Kazakhstan in the bronze medal match.
Men’s hockey team – Bronze medal
Indian Olympic Medal Winners 2020: Indian men’s hockey team has the richest history in Olympics field hockey events. Out of 24 editions of Olympics in which field hockey was an event, India won 8 gold medals where no other team has even half of it. But the tragic part is that India’s last gold hockey medal was the gold medal in the 1980 Moscow Olympics. After 41 years of medal drought, a glimpse of the return of Indian hockey was seen at Tokyo 2020. India had their best squad in recent years and the performance in the tournament was clearly up to it. Belgium defeated India in the semifinals and went on to win the tournament.
India clinched the bronze beating Germany in a nine-goal thriller. For a team with the legacy of being the greatest hockey team in Olympic history, a bronze wouldn’t suffice. But for a country without a medal in their national game for 41 years, this third place could be a beginning of a new golden era.-- Advertisement --
