Indian Oil Corporation Sets Sights on Powering Formula 1, Await Certification

Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) is aiming to become a prominent global supplier of fuel for Formula 1 Championships. Recent reports suggest that the company is eagerly awaiting Formula 1 fuel certification to solidify its position in the international market. IOC expects approval for the supply of high-octane petrol, adhering to the regulations set by the F1 governing body, FIA, within the next three months.

Chairman Shrikant Madhav Vaidya elaborated on the specifications of F1 petrol, highlighting its octane number surpassing 95. He emphasized that manufacturers participating in the lucrative event choose varying specifications based on their specific needs. Vaidya also disclosed the company’s strategy to produce F1 fuel at its latest refinery in Paradip, Odisha. The strategic location of this facility provides convenient access to export routes. Itfurther enhances IOC’s capabilities in meeting the demands of the Formula One market.

Formula One teams currently utilize E10 fuel, incorporating a 10% bio-ethanol blend. There are plans within the championships to transition to 100% sustainable fuel, obtained from non-food-bio-derived sources, authentic municipal waste, or sustainable carbon capture. IOC has ventured into the racing fuels sector by introducing its high-octane ‘STORM’ fuel designed for motorcycle racing. The 2024 Formula One season commenced with the Bahrain Grand Prix. Max Verstappen, the three-time reigning champion from Red Bull Racing, secured victory with a commanding performance, leading from pole position to the checkered flag. Carlos Sainz secured a podium finish in Bahrain ahead of Ferrari teammate Charles Leclerc, who claimed the fourth position.
