South Africa Innings
Opening the batting for the Proteas were Laura Wolvaardt and Lizelle Lee, who was bowled out on the very 1st ball of the innings thanks to Jhulan Goswami. Lee’s early dismissal meant her opening partner Laura Wolvaardt and one down Trisha Chetty had to bat exceptionally well to establish a decent opening score. However, the South Africans lost their second wicket of Trisha Chetty after just 32 runs.
It didn’t look good for the Proteas from then on as they kept losing wickets at regular intervals. The best batter for South Africa was Marizanne Kapp who scored her maiden half-century (54) against India. Supporting her was Laura who scored 39 runs off 62 deliveries followed by captain Sune Luus who scored 22 runs off 43 balls. The Proteas could manage to put up a score of 164 with all their wickets lost and four more overs still to bowl.
As for the Indian bowlers Shikha Pandey, Ekta Bisht and Poonam Yadav took 2 wickets each while giving away a total of 99 runs. Deepti Sharma, on the other hand took 1 wicket for 31 runs in her 10 overs. Jhulan Goswami stood out with her impressive bowling figures of 3/33 in 7.1 overs.
Indian openers Priya Punia and Jemimah Rodrigues both played extremely well. Rodrigues got out after scoring 55 runs, of which she hit 28 runs through boundaries itself. Punam Raut was next up for India, however, she could only score 16 runs in 38 deliveries. Indian skipper and cricket legend Mithali Raj was on the crease to support Priya, but at this point, the game was all but lost for the Proteas as India only needed 32 runs to win with more than 10 overs to bowl.
Debutant opener Punia scored an unbeaten 75 runs in 124 balls, hitting 8 boundaries in the match with her skipper scoring 11 from 24. This was enough as India easily crossed the line with 50 balls to spare.
Nondumiso Shangase gave away 39 runs in 8 overs and Nadine de Klerk who conceded 29 in her 7.4 overs, were the only bowlers to pick wickets for the Proteas. Tumi Sekhukhune (7 overs) and Sune Luus (4 overs) both gave away 22 runs in their respective overs. While Ayabonga Khaka (5 overs) and Ayabonga Khaka (6 overs) conceded 19 runs each. Right arm fast bowler Shabnim Ismail conceded just 14 runs in her 4 overs with one of those being a maiden over.
Debutant Priya Punia won the man of the match award for her unbeaten 75 runs of 124 balls in her first ODI match.
Mithali Raj became the 1st woman in cricket to complete 20 years in international cricket. With 204 innings played so far, Mithali also holds the record for the most number of ODI’s played in women’s cricket. We salute her dedication and commitment to the sport! Kudos Mithali Raj, Kudos team India!
