On Sunday, in Budapest, the Indian 4×400 Relay Team secured the fifth position in the final of the World Athletics Championships 2023. The gold medal was clinched by the USA, while France secured silver and Great Britain earned the bronze.
During the semifinal heats, the Indian relay team had established an Asian record, but in the final, they managed only a fifth-place finish, completing the race in 2:59.92 seconds. The United States maintained their dominant streak, securing first place with a time of 2:57:31 seconds. Additionally, the French team established a fresh national record by completing the race in 2:58.45 seconds. Great Britain secured the bronze medal, clocking their season’s best time of 2:58:71 seconds.

Historically unprecedented, the Indian men’s team achieved a significant milestone by qualifying for the final of the World Athletics Championships 4×400 relay for the very first time. Comprising Muhammed Anas, Amoj Jacob, Muhammed Ajmal Variyathodi, and Rajesh Ramesh, the team clocked an impressive time of 2:59.05.
Their remarkable performance in the semifinals guaranteed their spot in the final event, where they competed against strong contenders including the US, Great Britain, Italy, and Jamaica. Despite their outstanding showing, the US quartet featuring Quincy Hall, Vernon Norwood, Justin Robinson, and Rai Benjamin dominated the final race, leaving the other teams trailing behind. On Saturday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his congratulations to the Indian men’s relay team for their impressive performance in the semifinal heats held in Budapest.
