The Sports Authority of India’s National Centre of Excellence (SAI NCOE) in Bengaluru proudly felicitated the Indian Women’s Junior Hockey team for their remarkable achievement in securing their first-ever title at the 2023 Junior Women’s Hockey Asia Cup. The felicitation ceremony took place at the SAI NCOE premises on Tuesday. The ceremony commenced with a grand welcome by SAI officials at the Kempegowda Airport in Bengaluru.
Preeti, captain of the team said,
“We fought well and played together as a team. There was a mix of old and young players but we blended well. We want to thank the Hon’ble Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi as well as the Union Sports Minister Anurag Singh Thakur for their constant support. I thank everyone in SAI Bengaluru too who are just a phone call away to solve all our problems.”
These talented young athletes, representing the SAI NCOE, displayed incredible skill and determination, captivating spectators and admirers alike. Among the team members were 17 Khelo India Athletes who hail from different SAI National Centres of Excellence.
The comprehensive assessments and trials for the team were conducted at the SAI NCOE Bengaluru. Throughout the tournament, the girls remained unbeaten, winning five matches and drawing one before triumphing in the final. Annu emerged as the top scorer, netting a remarkable total of 9 goals.
It is worth noting that the Junior Men’s hockey team also claimed victory in the Asia Cup 2023 held in Salalah, Oman, securing their fourth Junior Asia Cup title. Similar to their female counterparts, the junior men’s team remained unbeaten throughout the competition, displaying their exceptional skills and teamwork.
