Indian Archers Ace Asia Cup Leg 1, Secures Six Team Final Spots in Baghdad

Indian archers, including the former world number one Deepika Kumari, who is staging a comeback after a 20-month hiatus, dominated the preliminary rounds to secure spots in the final for six team events, guaranteeing themselves an equal number of medals in the Asia Cup Leg 1 held on Thursday in Baghdad.

The three-time Olympian, who experienced a dip in form after embracing motherhood, secured the second position in the women’s recurve team event qualification, trailing behind Simranjeet Kaur. In the elimination round, the Indian women’s recurve team, featuring Bhajan Kaur, delivered a flawless performance, defeating hosts Iraq and advancing to the gold medal clash against Uzbekistan.

Similarly, the men’s recurve team comprising Dhiraj Bommadevara, Pravin Jadhav, and Tarundeep Rai triumphed over the hosts in straight sets, earning themselves a spot in the final of Asia Cup Leg 1 where they will face Bangladesh. Additionally, in the recurve mixed team event, India breezed through the competition by defeating Syria and Qatar in straight sets, securing a spot in the final. The duo of Dhiraj and Simranjeet is set to compete against Bangladesh for the coveted title.

Prathamesh Jawkar, Priyansh, and Kushal Dalal from India secured a victory over the host nation Iraq with a score of 233-223 in the semifinals, earning a spot in the men’s compound team final against Iran.

In a parallel success, the trio of Aditi Swami, Priya Gurjar, and Parneet Kaur triumphed over Afghanistan with a score of 234-210 in the compound women’s team event semifinal of Asia Cup Leg 1, setting the stage for a final showdown against Iran.
