Juyel hails from one of the remotest villages in Bengal. His home is in the village of Dhoapapara in the Gajol sub-division of Maldaha district. His father Nisham Sarkar is a farmer who does farming on others’ lands. Living in a mud house they struggle a lot to survive financially. Juyel said,

“I did not know about archery. While studying at a local school a teacher encouraged me and I started learning archery at a local ground. Srimanta Chowdhury was a local archery coach. I did not have any arrows or a bow. So, I made the equipment of bamboo.”

Juyel started performing well in the training and got admitted to Bengal Archery Academy at Jhargram, which is run by the West Bengal state sports ministry. There are 32 selected promising students at this academy including Juyel and are training under experienced coaches like Chandrashekhar Lagori, and Barjo Singh. The 17-year-old archer broke into the junior Indian squad for the Asia Cup first time in 2021.

The Distraction

During the Covid-19 pandemic, the academy was closed and all the students went back home. Juyel lost his focus after being completely detached from archery. Even after coming back to the academy, Juyel expressed reluctance to resume training. He was finally recharged mentally by academy coaches and then never looked back.

“I have to become successful at the senior level. Otherwise, I will not be able to get a job or sponsorship. I have a long desire to have a modern arrow and bow. I can buy it once I get a job.”

Now, the academy provides modern equipment including arrows and bows to all of its students.
