India vs WI ODI Series: This bowler to replace injured Bhuvneshwar Kumar

Highlights

  • Bhuvneshwar Kumar will miss the 3-match ODI series against West Indies.
  • Shardul Thakur will be replacing him.
  • The young pacer last played for India in the 2018 Asia Cup.

Ace fast bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar has been deemed unfit for the upcoming ODI series against West Indies courtesy of an injury. As a result, Mumbai pacer Shardul Thakur will be  replacing him for the 3-match series.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar has struggled with injuries ever since the 2018 Indian Premier League (IPL). The back injury didn’t allow him to feature in the season as well as games that followed.

He also struggled to produce an impact in India’s high-wire tour of England, where he missed T20Is and ODIs. Bhuvneshwar had to eventually return home midway through the Test series after the resurfacing of the back injury.

Kumar then struggled with hamstring injuries during the 2019 ICC World Cup as well. The India pacer was seen walking off midway in the middle of the high-profile encounter against rivals Pakistan in Manchester.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar had returned optimistically for the T20Is against West Indies, having missed the series against South Africa and Bangladesh at home. He had featured in all the three games.

However, the pacer reportedly picked up another hamstring knock during the Men in Blue’s 2-1 victory over West Indies earlier in the week.

Explaining Bhuvneshwar’s conditions, bowling coach Bharat Arun informed that the sports physiotherapists were constantly assessing the pacer’s injury.

“The physios are taking a call. They would give a press release later in the evening after the assessments,” Bharat Arun said on Friday.

Shardul Thakur has yet to feature for India ever since the Asia Cup in 2018. With Navdeep Saini also recuperating from an injury, Team India had to call Shardul back to the starting XI.

Thakur was seen performing brilliantly, not with the ball but with the bat, having slammed a quickfire 64 for Baroda in the first round match of the Ranji Trophy. However, the pacer could pick only a solitary wicket during his team’s massive win.
