India vs New Zealand Women’s 1st T20: New Zealand Beat India by 23 Runs

The New Zealand women’s team beat India by 23 runs in the first T20 international at Wellington today (6 February 2019).

Chasing an average total of 160, Smriti Mandhana scored the fastest fifty for India in 24 balls, breaking her own previous record of 25 balls. As soon as her wicket fell, the Indian batting crumbled for 136, falling 23 runs short.

The White Ferns batted first. India got an early wicket that of Suzie Bates. She was caught by Tania Bhatia off Radha Yadav for 7 (6). Caitlin Gurrey had a start of 15 (16) but couldn’t go big. Poonam Yadav claimed her wicket. Opener Sophie Devine and captain Amy Satterthwaite stitched together a partnership of 69. Devine looked exceptional in her innings of 62 off 48 balls. She hit 6 boundaries and 2 sixes in her innings.

Arundhati Reddy took Devine’s wicket. In the next over, captain Satterthwaite too departed. Deepti Sharma dismissed her for 33 off 27 balls. In her innings, she hit 4 boundaries. New Zealand managed to score 159/4 in their 20 overs after a late hammering from Wicketkeeper Katey Martin. She scored 27* (14) which included 2 fours and a 6.

India’s innings

Chasing an average score, India lost the first wicket in the first over itself. Priya Punia made just 4 (5). Opener Smriti Mandhana and 18-year-old sensation Jemimah Rodriguez added 98 runs for the second wicket.

Mandhana broke her own previous record for the fastest fifty. She scored her fifty of 24 balls. She was dismissed at 58 off 34 balls. The left-hander hit 7 boundaries and 3 sixes in her innings. Immediately, in the next over, Rodriguez too departed. She made 39 (33). She hit 6 boundaries in her innings.

At one point, India was cruising to an easy victory. But then, from a position of 102/1, India fell like ninepins. After the fall of Mandhana and Rodriguez wickets, no other batswoman could stay on the crease. Hemalatha (3), Captain Harmanpreet Kaur (17), Anuja Patil (0), Arundhati Reddy (2), Deepti Sharma (5), Taniya Bhatia (1), Radha Yadav (3) – fell one after the other as India was all out for 136 in 19.1 overs, falling 23 runs short.

For New Zealand, Lea Tahuhu picked up the most 3 wickets. Amelia Kerr and Leigh Kasperek picked up 2 wickets each. Amy Satterthwaite, Rosemary Mair and Sophie Devine claimed a wicket each.
