The World Test Championship (WTC) cycle for 2021–2023 is coming to an end and the much-awaited championship final will include India and Australia. India is making it to the final for the second consecutive time. In the last cycle of the WTC, they were defeated by New Zealand in Southampton’s Rose Bowl.

The WTC journey for India began in 2021 with IND Vs. ENG

India played their first series against England in the second round of the World Test Championship, led by captain and coach KohliShastri. To lead the series 2-1, the Indian team won the red ball games at Lords and The Oval in London. Due to the looming threat of the coronavirus, the fifth and final Test match, originally scheduled to take place at Edgbaston, had to be postponed. Unfortunately, the team experienced a defeat in the previous match, resulting in a series score of 2-2.

When New Zealand visited India to play red-ball games in 2021, Team India had a new coach and captain. Team India triumph the test match in Mumbai and drew the Test match in Kanpur following a disappointing showing in the T20 World Cup 2021. Ravi Shastri’s coaching tenure ended after the 2021 World Cup, and Virat Kohli stood down as captain of the Blues. So, Rahul Dravid and Rohit Sharma have been guiding the Team India since then.

South Africa was the only place India lost a series

Team India travelled to South Africa intending to win the country’s first Test series. But that did not happen, and the Proteas are the only team against which the men in blue have yet to win a Test series. Despite starting the series on a high note, India was defeated by a score of 1-2. KL Rahul smashed a century in Centurion. However, it was India’s weakest batting performance that ultimately cost them the series.

India dominated Sri Lanka series

The men in blue have been strong at home, making it difficult to beat them. In March 2022, Sri Lanka visited India for a two-match Test series as well as a Twenty20 International series. Rohit Sharma led the men in blue team for the first time in this series as their full-time captain. Team India easily defeated Sri Lanka, taking the series by a score of 2-0.

India defeated Bangladesh in the Test Series

India aimed to defend their record against the Bangla Tigers of never losing a Test match. In Dec 2022, KL Rahul captained the side after Rohit Sharma was ruled out of the red-ball series. Bangladesh performed admirably in that series. Nonetheless, Team India was too good for them. A partnership between Shreyas Iyer and Ravichandran Ashwin in a difficult scenario helped India win the series by two wickets.

India won Border Gavaskar Trophy

The Border Gavaskar Trophy series was the most anticipated by fans at the start of 2023. India dominated the first Test match in Nagpur, and they continued their outstanding performance in New Delhi. However, after handing over the captaincy to Steve Smith, Australia won the third Test match in Indore and drew the final Test match of the BGT 2023 series in Ahmedabad. However, it did not prevent India from winning the fourth consecutive Test series against Australia. India has secured a place in the World Test Championship final in 2023.

World Test Championship (WTC) Final Showdown

Team India ended the 2021–23 cycle second in the points standings, with 127 points from 18 matches and a PCT of 58.80. They won ten of their matches and drew three. Australia led the table with a PCT of 66.67, winning eleven of ten matches and ending with 152 points. The IND vs. AUS series will continue as both sides reached the World Test Championship (WTC) finals in 2023. The ICC tournament’s major showdown will be held at The Oval in England from June 7th to June 11th, 2023. India and Australia will meet for the sixth time in a year to play the red ball game, which is also the most time in a year.
