Indian Women’s Hockey Team Draw 1-1 with Ireland in the First Friendly Match

Indian women’s hockey team today drew with the world cup silver medalists Ireland in the opening friendly match at Murcia in Spain on Friday.

India on a ‘Ten-day tour to Spain’

Indian women’s hockey is currently on a 10-day tour of Spain. After levelling the four-match series with hosts Spain, India showed a great performance in the first game with Ireland.

Team skipper Rani Rampal on Thursday had said their Spanish tour will help “understand where we stand” ahead of the Olympic Qualifiers, which is slated to be held later this year.

 

Details of the opening friendly match between India and Ireland

Drag-flicker Gurjit Kaur scored in the first half of the opening friendly match and put India ahead but Ireland fought back and was able to draw.

India made it to a good start by making the first breakthrough in the fourth minute when they got the penalty corner opportunity. But they missed it because of the good Irish defending.

 

In the second quarter again, India made up for the lost opportunity as they were awarded a penalty corner for a foul committed by an Irish defender. Gurjit, India’s drag-flicker hit a great shot against the Irish goalkeeper Emma Buckley in the 18th minute, therefore, placing India on the lead by 1-0.

The match ended in a draw

 

While India defended the lead well, the Irish pushed for an exclusive goal. In the 45th minute, Ireland struck a field goal through Sarah Hawkshaw, that ultimately levelled the score to 1-1.

In the final quarter, both teams gave a neck to neck competition to each other. India showed great defense. India’s goalkeeper Savita made a good attempt to deny Ireland a goal off a PC few minutes before the final hooter ending the match in a draw.

The visitors will end their 10-day tour of Spain with the second and final friendly match against Ireland on Sunday.
