India vs Australia: Rohit Scores a Hundred but India Loses their First ODI

Australia has defeated India in the first of the three-match ODI series at the Sydney Cricket Ground by 34 runs today.

Chasing a modest target of 289, the Indian top order including Shikhar Dhawan, Virat Kohli and Ambati Rayadu fell as soon as they arrived and the scoreboard read 4/3. Opener Rohit Sharma and former captain MS Dhoni stitched together a brilliant partnership but Dhoni’s wicket fell at the wrong time which cost India the game.

Earlier, Australia’s captain Aaron Finch won the toss and elected to bat first. Bhubaneswar Kumar picked up Finch (6) very early in the innings. Wicketkeeper-batsman Alex Carry (24) hung on for a while. But, it was the contributions for the Test batsmen Usman Khawaja and Shaun Marsh that set the game.

Khawaja made 59 (81) and Marsh added 54 (70). Peter Handscomb made the most 73 (61) which included 6 fours and 2 sixes. His and Marcus Stoinis’s (47) innings gave impetus to the slow Australian batting. Maxwell who came at number 7 made 11 off 5 balls.

For India, Chinaman Kuldeep Yadav was the pick of the bowlers. He picked up 2 wickets giving away only 54 runs. Bhubaneswar Kumar too picked up 2 wickets but gave away 66 runs. Jadeja claimed a wicket as Australia finished with 288/5 in their 50 overs. The total at the time looked short but at the end, it proved to be otherwise.

Set a modest 289 to chase, India lost Dhawan, Captain Kohli and Ambati Rayadu in quick succession. The scoreboard read 4/3. MS Dhoni joined Rohit Sharma onto the crease. The duo stitched together a brilliant partnership of 137 runs until Dhoni was wrapped in front of the wicket by Jason Behrendorff. He made 51 off 96 balls. He also completed his 10,000 ODI runs along the way. While their partnership, India had not hit a boundary until 20.1 overs.


Rohit Sharma continued to plunder runs after Dhoni’s wicket fell but ran out of partners later. Meanwhile, he completed his 22nd ODI century also becoming the first Indian batsman to slam 5 ODI centuries in Australia. He made 133 off 129 balls which included 10 fours and 6 sixes. Bhubaneswar Kumar remained not out at the end. He made 29 off 23 balls. India fell short by 34 runs.

This is Australia’s 1000th international win and they now lead the three-match series 1-0.
