Indian opener Shikhar Dhawan will not be featuring in the upcoming T20I series against West Indies it was confirmed by BCCI on Wednesday. He will be replaced by Sanju Samson for the series that will start in the first week of December.

“Dhawan suffered a deep cut on his left knee during a Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy game against Maharashtra in Surat. The BCCI Medical Team assessed him on Tuesday to review the healing of his wound. The BCCI Medical Team has suggested that Dhawan needs some more time for his stitches to come off and his wound to heal completely,” read the BCCI statement.

Samson was also a part of the India squad for the T20I series against Bangladesh. However, the batsman-wicket keeper didn’t get a single game to play.

The Kerala cricketer was also left out for the series against West Indies in last week’s squad announcement. However, the injury to Dhawan has open doors for a place in the starting XI for the youngster.

Samson hit 112 runs from four matches in the recently concluded Syed Mushtaq Ali trophy.

Earlier last month, he created history in the Vijay Hazare Trophy by scoring an unbeaten 212 runs, which is the highest individual score by an Indian in List A games.

With Rishab Pant’s form dwindling, Sanju Samson may well get his lucky break in the upcoming series.

Furthermore, BCCI also revealed that Test wicket-keeper Wriddhiman Saha had undergone a surgery on his right ring finger.
