After winning the first test in Centurion, India seemed to be on the verge of making history. But, failing to keep up the momentum, they have now lost the series 1-2 to South Africa.
Having won a historic series in Australia and leading in England, India was the favorite for this series. But, the inexperienced South African team surprised everyone by winning 2-1.
The Third Test
Chasing 212, South Africa began the fourth day on 101-2. They had the upper hand due to Captain Dean Elgar and Keegan Peterson’s 78 run stand. Bumrah had struck Elgar at the last ball of the third day.
Earlier, India had made 223 in their first innings, with the help of Captain Virat Kohli‘s 79. In response, Keegan Peterson’s 72 helped South Africa reach 210.
Despite having a 13 run lead in their second innings, India failed to capitalize. Rishabh Pant’s sensational century helped India reach a total of 198.
South Africa had to chase 212. By the end of the third day, they were in a comfortable situation, scoring 101-2.
India failed to give the process a hard time, as they chased the total quite easily. Keegan Petersen scored yet another fifty, ending as the series’ highest run-scorer (276 runs).
The final nail in the coffin came from the duo of Rassie van der Dussen (41 not out) and Tenda Bavuma (32 not out).
The Final Frontier
India is yet to win a test series in South Africa, often called ‘The Final Frontier’.
They have won two test matches under Virat Kohli by now, most by any Indian Captain. But a series win still eludes him.
This was probably India’s biggest chance to win a series in South Africa with a new inexperienced South African side as opposition. But, we lost this chance by 1-2.
