On Monday, Virat Kohli achieved another remarkable milestone in his cricketing career by surpassing Sachin Tendulkar‘s record of 13,000 runs in One Day Internationals (ODIs) during the Asia Cup 2023 Super Four match between India and Pakistan. Kohli, the former captain of the Indian cricket team, resumed his innings on the reserve day and reached a half-century in just 55 deliveries. Virat Kohli became the fastest Indian to 13000 ODI runs.
He then went on to score his 47th ODI century. In the process, Kohli surpassed the legendary Sachin Tendulkar’s record and accomplished this feat in his 267th ODI innings. This achievement solidifies his position as the fastest player to reach 8,000, 9,000, 10,000, 11,000, 12,000, and now 13,000 runs in ODIs.
Kohli’s achievement of reaching 13,000 runs in ODIs in 54 fewer innings than Tendulkar (who took 321 innings) adds significance to the ongoing debate between Virat and Sachin. Furthermore, Kohli’s 47th century brings him within just two centuries of matching his idol’s record for the most ODI centuries. He is also only three centuries away from surpassing Sachin’s incredible milestone of 50 one-day tons, a remarkable achievement in its own right.
During the match against Pakistan, Kohli played a pivotal role in helping India achieve a formidable total of 356/2. KL Rahul also contributed significantly, scoring his sixth ODI century. Together, Kohli and Rahul formed an unbeaten partnership of 233 runs for the third wicket, which stands as the highest ever in Asia Cup history for any wicket. Notably, this marks Kohli’s fourth consecutive century at Colombo’s R. Premadasa Stadium.
