The Indian Hockey fans were in awe as the young Indian team produced a complete performance against Belgium. If we turn a few history pages, the 1st December is not a day which Indian fans will look back at. In the 1982 Asian games, Pakistan defeated India, 1-7. But now Indian fans have got something to look back at which will give them some happy memories. A 1-0 victory against Belgium takes them one step closer to retaining their title. Their opponents will be Germany who is currently in a hot form.
The Match Summary
In a 16,000 capacity stadium, only 1,500 fans came which mostly consisted of academy kids and invitees. The game didn’t have too many goals to turn it into a thriller, but a clean sheet highlights India’s rock-solid defence. Belgium’s constantly struggled to pierce through India’s defence from the first quarter. The only goal of the match came at the 20th minute as Sharda Nand Tiwari slotted the ball into the back of the net. India’s stronghold in terms of attacking is the penalty corner. Once again their main weapon proved to be the turning point of the game.
A team that has scored 12 goals from penalty corner did not look to create more opportunities in their opponent’s half. The sheer numbers should be enough to drive the Indian attackers to look for possible penalty corners. Against Germany, this could prove to be the key through which they can unlock Germany’s defence.
India will face Germany on Friday in the second semi-final. India’s future in terms of hockey looks bright and the fans will be hoping for a similar performance against Belgium.
