IND vs AUS 4th Test Day 1: Cheteshwar Pujara’s Century Takes India To 303/4

‘The Rock’ Cheteshwar Pujara slammed his third century of the series against Australia on Day 1 of the 4th Test match at the Sydney Cricket Ground. Opener Mayank Agarwal gave another noteworthy contribution of 77, after his debut in the last Test match. At stumps on Day 1, India is at a dominating position, with the score of 303/4 and Pujara on 130* alongside Hanuma Vihari on 39*.

The Australian bowlers had to toil hard. Australia’s leading wicket-taker of the series – Pat Cummins went wicketless. Josh Hazelwood picked up 2 wickets while Mitchell Starc and Nathan Lyon claimed a wicket each.

India has already retained the Border-Gavaskar trophy with a 2-1 lead in the series. With a win in this test match, the Virat Kohli led team will become the first Indian side ever to register a Test series win Down Under.

Indian captain Virat Kohli won the toss and elected to bat first. There were a couple of changes in the team. Rohit Sharma away at Mumbai, KL Rahul took his place and India played another spinner in Kuldeep Yadav as the Sydney wicket is touted to be spin friendly.

Best friends Mayank Agarwal and KL Rahul opened the batting. The duo was the first Karnataka pair to open the innings for India. But the partnership didn’t last long. The out of form Rahul edged a Josh Hazelwood delivery in just the second over of the match.

Cheteshwar Pujara joined Mayank Agarwal and the duo played very positive cricket. At lunch, India were at 69/1 with Agarwal on 42* and Pujara on 16*.

Session 2: 

Mayank Agarwal brought his second Test fifty in his second Test match. But, he was unable to convert it into a century as he went for a big shot off Lyon only, to find Stark in the deep. He made 77 off 112 balls along with 7 fours and 2 sixes. Agarwal and Pujara put on a partnership of 116 runs.

Indian skipper walked in showing support to the Pink Test and the McGrath Foundation.


Pujara brought up his half-century with a boundary. India went into tea at 177/2 with Pujara on 61* and Kohli on 23*.


Session 3: 

Hazelwood got the massive wicket of Virat Kohli shortly after the break. Trying to run down the ball to the boundary on the leg side, Kohli found the gloves of Tim Paine. He made 23. Kohli and Pujara put up 54 runs together.


Vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane joined Pujara. Rahane got a ripper from Mitchell Strac. The partnership of 48 was broken. Rahane made 18.


Cheteshwar Pujara brought up his 18th Test century, fifth against Australia and 3rd of the series in 199 balls.


Hanuma Vihari too played some cracking shots in the final session. At stumps, India is on the score of 303/4 and Pujara on 130* alongside Hanuma Vihari on 39*.


India would look to post a huge first innings total with Rishabh Pant and Ravindra Jadeja still to bat Indian prospects are looking good.
