Cricket is a very popular game, with a majority of followers coming from India, of course. In fact, it’s the second most popular game in the world. No wonder, since India is also the home of the biggest annual cricket tournament, the IPL. (which was estimated to have had 105 million unique viewers during its last season!. And cricket 2022 will be much bigger than before).

But cricket is popular in other parts of the world as well. The tournaments are being held everywhere from the West Indies to Australia.

Cricket 2022: ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, Australia

This shouldn’t be missed as it is one of the most important cricket 2022 championships. It will be held in Australia.

16 teams from all over the world will be taking part in this tournament. It will include the top ten teams from the rankings at a specific deadline. Six additional teams will be chosen through the tournament qualifier. This competition is organized every two years, and Australia was supposed to host it in 2020. But because of the Covid-19 Pandemic, the T20 World Cup was moved to the United Arab Emirates instead.

So far, seven tournaments have been organised, with the inaugural event being held in 2007 in South Africa. The level of the competitiveness of the tournament can be considered from the fact that WestIndies is the only country, which has gained the ground twice.

The Australians won their title for the first time when they defeated the New Zealand team in the finals of the 2021 cup.

This is what the Tournament’s CEO Michelle Enright, had to say about Australia finally hosting it

“With the unprecedented disruptions over the past two years, bringing the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup to Australia for the first time. It offers a perfect opportunity for fans across the whole country to experience the joy of a live global sporting event again. The ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in 2020 produced some incredible moments and created memories that will live with Australian cricket fans forever. Now it’s time for the men’s event to take center stage and claim its own place in history.”

The cricket 2022 T20 World Cup will start on October 16. It will consist of 45 games. The semi-finals being played on the 9th and 10th of November, and the finals on the 13th of November.

With Australia and New Zealand, being the last year’s finalists. And England, India, Pakistan, South Africa, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh were the six other teams who have qualified for the tournament.

Namibia, Scotland, Sri Lanka, and West Indies will also participate in the first round of the tournament.

ICC Men’s Under 19 Cricket World Cup, West Indies

The fourteenth edition of the Under 19 Men’s Cricket World Cup will be organized in West Indies for the first time. A total of 16 teams will be participating in the tournament. This limited-overs cricket tournament will take place in four West Indies nations from January 14th to February 5th of 2022. For any serious cricket fan, this is a must-see.

The ICC confirmed in November that the tournament will be played in Guyana, Trinidad, Antigua, and St Kitts and Nevis. The final will be held in Antigua, at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium.

This tournament gained the highlights after the New Zealand team decided to withdraw from it, because of the prolonged mandatory quarantine restrictions for minors on their return home, and Scotland had to replace them.

The teams will include Canada, Sri Lanka, England, the UAE, the West Indies, India, Scotland, Australia, and of course, the defending champions- Bangladesh.

The director of the tournament, Fawwaz Baksh applauded the governments of  Antigua & Barbuda, Guyana, St. Kitts & Nevis, and Trinidad & Tobago for their effort in developing cricket infrastructure. The hotel industry collaboration in ensuring seamless accommodation for all of the 16 teams, and Baksh is positive that the tournament will boost the local economies too.

Why Fawwaz Baksh is optimistic?

“A number of community clubs and grounds will benefit from enhanced cricketing infrastructure after this event. Of course, there will also be a welcome financial impact in host territories, in terms of hotel bookings, transportation, catering, and the hiring of temporary staff.”

The director’s optimistic forecasts seem very realistic. The second edition of the ICC World Test Championship of Test Cricket started in August 2021 and is scheduled to finish on March 31st, 2023. This means that plenty of games will be played throughout 2022 before we get to the much anticipated final.

The final of the inaugural, 2019-2021 ICC World test championship took place at the Rose Bowl, England, between the 18th and 23rd of June this year. The two teams that met in the finals were India and New Zealand. In the end, New Zealand won the match by eight wickets to be crowned as the champions of the ICC world test championship. Kiwis were awarded the prize money of  US$1.6 million, while the Indian team got US$800,000 for second place.
