The League Committee of the All India Football Federation (AIFF) has opted to augment the permissible count of players within an I-League squad from 30 to 35. AIFF also deemed it wise to implement a youth quota for young players. This requires clubs to include eight players under the age of 22 in their I-League squads. This decision emerged from a virtual meeting held on Tuesday. The Committee also upheld the existing policy concerning the maximum number of foreign players that a club can enlist for the I-League.

Also in attendance were AIFF’s Vice President NA Haris, Secretary General Dr Shaji Prabhakaran, and Deputy Secretary General Satyanarayan M.

Addressing the meeting, Dr Prabhakaran shared:

“We have important agendas to discuss and decide upon regarding the new Third Division League, for which state FAs have nominated their respective teams. We have also received communications and requests from clubs and state FAs, which we need to consider before taking decisions.”

The AIFF League Committee has chosen to continue the existing rules regarding foreign player quotas in the I-League. Similar to the 2022-23 season, clubs can enlist six foreign players (with one from an AFC Member Association) in their matchday squad. However, during a match, they can have a maximum of four foreigners (including one from an AFC Member Association) on the field.
