Hockey India League
The league comprises six teams competing against one another; eight city-based franchises (similar to the IPL or ISL) have participated in the league, two of which have dropped out; both Mumbai and Ranchi franchises were resold after only one season.
The current teams are the Kalinga Lancers (from Orissa), Dabang Mumbai, Delhi Waveriders, Punjab Warriors, Ranchi Rays (from Jharkhand), and Uttar Pradesh Wizards; one notable characteristic is that in the five seasons held thus far, five different teams have won the championship. While the league was initially regarded as a success and a blessing for Indian players (because of the high pay), there appear to be issues currently. Indian players are not being paid on a regular basis, and the tournament is suspected of favoring northern India alone.
Aga Khan Cup
The Aga Khan tournament goes on for an exceptionally long duration. This is due to the fact that the competition has just ground at its disposal. All Aga Khan tournament matches are held on the grounds of Bombay Gymkhana. They are unable to play more than one match every day.
Another issue is that the Aga Khan and Beighton Cup events are always scheduled at the same time.
The Beighton Cup said to be the world’s oldest or at least one of the oldest hockey tournaments in India, commenced in Calcutta in 1895. The Indian Football Association was the first to host the competition, which is presently hosted by the Bengal Hockey Association. Leslie Claudius, Gurbux Singh, Lance Naik Dhyan Chand, Pat Jensen, Joe Gallibardy, and more Indian hockey stars have competed in the event. In fact, it is the reason why, at least at first, Calcutta was India’s hockey capital.
Nehru Senior Hockey Tournament
This is only one of the numerous events organized by the Jawaharlal Nehru Hockey Tournament Society. The other competitions are for boys (Under-15 & Under-17), girls (Under-17), and universities; this is the oldest event, with its 54th edition in 2017.
Mahant Raja Sarveshwar Das Memorial All India Hockey Tournament
Around December 2017-January 2018, the 76th tournament was held at Rajnandgaon International Hockey Stadium, near Raipur. Central Railway, South Central Railways Secunderabad, Bharat Petroleum, SAIL (Rourkela), Rajnandgaon District Hockey Association, and a number of other teams competed.
S.N Vohra All-India Gurmit Memorial Hockey Tournament
From 2001 through 2017, CHA conducted S.N.Vohra’s under 14 Sub Junior Hockey competitions to develop hockey at the grassroots level. Since 1971, the Rock Rovers Hockey Club Chandigarh, an associated unit of CHA (Hockey Chandigarh), has hosted the All India Gurmit Memorial Hockey Tournament (A- Grade), which is now in its 48th year. The 46th edition was held in Chandigarh in 2016. The winners of the 45th season were Punjab & Sindh Bank.
