There is nothing more appealing than a perfect start in a cricket match. With the bowl, it’s a wicket in the very first over, and with the bat, a relentless opening partnership. A good opening stand is always intimidating for the opponents and it takes the game away from them right from the start. Most teams even lose their plans and fell into utter chaos trying to stop an unstoppable pair of batsmen. Today, we take you through the best & highest opening partnership in IPL history.
In an era of batting dominance, opening stands are indispensable. IPL 2021 has been an ideal example for it. All of the teams had great opening pairs and at most instances when the opening pair failed, they ended up in the losing side, especially in the second leg of the tournament. IPL has seen some of the international superstars teaming up as an opening duo like Shane Watson and Faf Du Plessis, and sometimes a pair of young talents make difference at the start like Shubman Gill and Venkatesh Iyer.

On match number 16 of IPL 2021, RCB faced Rajasthan Royals at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. Virat Kohli not only saved his wicket, but caused more damage on the other end with his 72 runs. The chase was done and dusted by the 17th over and the scorecard read 181/0.
Shane Watson and Faf Du Plessis – 181* against KXIP in 2020
2020 was CSK’s worst IPL season where they failed to qualify to the playoffs for the first time in their history. After the first win against Mumbai Indians, they lost points consecutively. It was unbelievable that such a consistent franchise forgot the way to win matches. The match against KXIP turned out to be the relieving match for CSK. Reverting to a target of 179, Faf Du Plessis and Shane Watson, two of the international legends hold together to get through the chase without any loss. Watson scored 83 runs off 53 balls while the then South African captain scored 27 from the same number of delivers. The performance was supposed to be a boost for the team in their qualification fight but the momentum was not preserved.

Their inexperienced and fragile middle-order called for a good opening stand every match and the pair was delivering it almost every time. In this particular match, they gave KXIP a massive head start of 183 in 16.3 overs. Mayank Agarwal was on fire achieving a century and KL Rahul held his patience to score 69 from 54 balls. The team total reached 223, one of the highest in IPL history. Unfortunately, their effort went in vain as RR chased down the record total in what was a scintillating game of cricket.
Highest opening partnership in IPL: Gautham Gambhir and Chris Lynn – 184* against GL in 2017

In their first match of the 2017 season against Gujarat Lions, the Lions scored 183 at Rajkot. To chase down the total, KKR unleashed Chris Lynn to cause havoc. Gujarat bowlers had no answers to his devastating striking along with the skipper, Gautam Gambhir. He ended up making 93 runs out of 41 deliveries and Gambhir had his time with an unbeaten 76 off 48 balls. The chase was completed with 31 balls to spare.
