Top 10+ highest individual score in ODI cricket | Batting Records

Since its commencement in the year 1971, the One Day International cricket format has witnessed a lot of exciting knocks. But over the years, as the competition grew intense, the need to score more runs rose as well. While traditionally, reaching 100 run was considered as a milestone, today it has turned in to a benchmark. Batsmen have pushed the envelope further with hard-hitting batting and batting-friendly pitches. Here is a list of 11 batsmen who have scored the highest individual score in ODI cricket and have registered their names in the cricketing record-maker’s list.

This innings by Sir Vivian Richards is one of the best knocks in the history of ODI cricket. Vivian Richards scored an unbeaten 189 in only 170 balls, at a strike rate of 111.18. This was a remarkable feat in the 1980s when cricket didn’t have many high scoring games. The Antiguan legend came to bat at a tough situation as the Windies had lost 2 early wickets. The fans watching this game at Manchester have said that they had never seen someone hit the ball all across the ground with so much ease before. He smashed 21 fours and 5 sixes in this historic innings. West Indies scored 272 runs batting first out of which the Caribbean legend made 189 himself! With this innings, Viv Richards made the record of scoring the highest individual score batting at number 4.

Next on this list is the former Pakistani opener Saeed Anwar. Saeed Anwar played a very attacking innings against India in Pakistan’s tour of India, 1997. He scored 194 in just 146 balls, falling short of just 6 runs to become the first cricketer to score a double hundred in a One-Day cricket match.

Even though the weather conditions in Chennai were extremely challenging, the left-handed opener managed to score at an amazing strike rate of 132.88. Anwar dominated the Indian bowling line up by smashing 21 fours and 5 sixes all around the park. Pakistan put up a massive total of 327/5 in the first innings and defeated India by 35 runs. He held the record of the highest individual ODI score for 13 years till the year 2010.

The Zimbabwean cricketer Charles Coventry on August 16, 2009 scored the highest individual ODI score at the Queen Sports Club Ground in Bulawayo, equalling Saeed Anwar’s record made in 1997. Coventry came out to bat when Zimbabwe were 5/1 in the second over. He played an unbeaten 194 in just 156 balls, with an impressive strike rate of 124.35. Charles Coventry smashed 16 fours and 7 sixes throughout the innings and missed his 200 in the last over of the innings.

Coventry holds the record for scoring the most number of runs in an innings batting at number 3. Unfortunately, he also holds the record of scoring the most number of runs in an innings on a losing side as Zimbabwe’s bowling line-up wasn’t able to give justice to Coventry’s magnificent. They lost the game very convincingly to Bangladesh by 4 wickets with 13 balls still remaining).

On 24 February, 2010, history was created at Captain Roop Singh Stadium in Gwalior when the ‘Master Blaster’, ‘The God of Cricket’ himself blessed his fans by becoming the first man on earth to score a double hundred in an ODI match. Sachin Tendulkar scored an unbeaten knock of 200* at an explosive strike rate of 136.05. A strong bowling line-up with exceptionally talented bowlers like Dale Steyn and Jacques Kallis was smashed all over the ground as Tendulkar hit 25 fours and 3 sixes in his 147 ball innings. Sachin helped India reach a mammoth total of 401 for the loss of only 3 wickets in their 50 overs and helped India defeat South Africa by a huge margin of 153 runs.

On 13th December 2017, Rohit Sharma became the only batsman to score 3 double hundreds in ODI cricket. He scored an unbeaten knock of 208 runs in just 153 balls. Rohit got out for just 2 in the previous game as India was defeated by Sri Lanka quite comfortably by 7 wickets with 176 balls remaining. However, the ‘Hitman’ came back with a record-breaking knock in the 2nd ODI and led India to reach a huge total of 392/4. India won the match by a massive margin of 141 runs. He smashed 13 fours and 12 sixes at a strike rate of 135.94. Although the initial part of the innings was slow, Rohit took only 36 balls to score the last 100 runs.

On 2nd November 2013 was the series decider between India and Australia at the Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru. It was Rohit Sharma who stole the hearts of millions of cricketing fans by scoring a mammoth 209 in just 158 balls at a blistering strike rate of 132.27. He guided India to a huge total of 383/6 and helped in clinching the ODI series against their arch rivals. This was Rohit’s first of the three 200s that he has scored in his ODI career. He thrashed Australia’s bowling line-up by smashing 16 sixes and till date holds the record for hitting the most number of sixes in an innings by an individual.

Recently, on 20th July 2018, Fakhar Zaman became the first Pakistani batsman to score a double hundred in ODIs. He scored an unbeaten 210 in just 156 balls at an explosive strike rate of 134.61. Zaman hit 25 fours and 5 sixes and shattered a fairly weak bowling line-up of Zimbabwe. He guided Pakistan in reaching a total of 399 for the loss of only one wicket. The left-handed opener was involved in a record breaking with opening partnership of 308 runs with Imam-ul-Haq and helped Pakistan in winning the game quite comfortably by a gigantic margin of 244 runs.

On 24th February 2015, Christopher Henry Gayle became the first batsman to score a double hundred in World Cups by smashing 215 runs off just 147 balls against Zimbabwe. He hit 10 fours and 16 sixes and equaled Rohit Sharma’s record of hitting the most sixes in an innings. West Indies lost their first wicket at 0 in the form of Dwayne Smith. But it was the ‘Gayle Storm’ accompanied by the Marlon Samuel’s 133*(156) that scored. Both batsmen made a 372-run partnership, which is the highest partnership in ODIs at any wicket. They ended up scoring their whole team’s total together as the Windies defeated Zimbabwe convincingly by 73 runs (D/L method).

Virender Sehwag, on 8th December 2011 became the second batsman after Sachin Tendulkar, to score a double hundred in ODI cricket. The aggressive right-handed opener smashed 219 off just 149 balls at an unbelievable strike rate of 146.97. He struck 25 fours and 7 sixes in every possible corner of Holkar Stadium, Indore. The ‘Nawab of Najafgarh’ broke the record of scoring the highest individual score by a captain in an ODI and led his team to score 418/5 in their quota of 50 overs. Till date, this is India’s highest team total in ODI cricket. India won the match very comfortably by 153 runs, special thanks to Viru’s historic knock, which was then the highest individual score in ODI cricket.

Second on this list is New Zealand’s star opener Martin Guptill . Guptill scored a blistering knock of 237 from 163 balls. As a result, he became the first Kiwi batsman to score a double hundred in ODI. The reason why this is one of the best innings in international cricket is because it came in an extremely crucial World Cup Quarter-Final in Wellington. Guptill guided New Zealand to a mammoth total of 393/6 which assisted them in reaching the semi-finals. They defeated the Windies by a huge margin of 143 runs. With this knock, Guptill broke the record of scoring the highest individual score in World Cups.

13th November 2014 is the date written down in history books as the day when the highest individual score in ODI cricket was scored by Rohit Sharma at his favourite cricket ground, the Eden Gardens of Kolkata. The Indian Vice-Captain played an unimaginable innings of 264 runs in just 173 balls at an even unimaginable strike rate of 152.63.

With this innings, the ‘Hitman’ also broke the record of hitting the most number of boundaries by an individual in ODI (42 – 33 fours and 9 sixes). Rohit faced 173 balls – the most number of balls a batsman has ever faced in a 50-over ODI format. Rohit guided India to a gigantic total of 404/5. India won the match by 153 runs as Sri Lanka got all out for 251 runs, 13 less than Rohit! The difference of runs between Rohit and the second highest run getter of the innings, Virat Kohli (66runs) was 198!

With the ICC World Cup 2019 around the corner, let’s hope one of the innings played in the tournament excites all the cricketing fans and becomes a part of this list in the coming future.
