“He should definitely be there” – Anil Kumble Opines About Kuldeep Yadav’s Test Exclusion

Anil Kumble opines that Kuldeep Yadav should be a member of India’s Test team and given opportunities to play whenever feasible. The left-arm wrist-spinner was recently left out of India’s Test team for the current series against the West Indies. Kuldeep was only being selected for the white-ball phase of the tour. Three finger spinners, Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, and Axar Patel, have been included to the roster for the longest version.

During a JioCinema debate, Kumble was questioned if Kuldeep should be part of India’s Test team, to which he replied,

“He should definitely be there because he is a very good bowler. Leg-spinners are very attacking bowlers and it is also difficult at times, they concede runs as well but you need to take a leg-spinner along with you and groom him, and whenever you get a chance, he should be given an opportunity.”

Noting that the Uttar Pradesh wrist-spinner has performed admirably whenever given the opportunity. The former Indian leg-spinner lamented the paucity of spinners of his caliber in Test cricket, stating,

“Kuldeep Yadav is a very good spinner for Test matches. He has given very good performances whenever he has got a chance as well. There are a lot of wrist-spinners in white-ball formats. We are not getting to see them much in Test matches.”

In eight Tests, Kuldeep Yadav has 34 wickets at an outstanding average of 21.55. In the final Test he participated in December 2022, he had statistics of 5/40 and 3/73 in Bangladesh’s two innings but was not offered a second opportunity.

Aakash Chopra then questioned Anil Kumble why he thinks wrist-spinners aren’t frequently seen in Test cricket. And whether it’s due to they’ve begun bowling faster and using more googlies in white-ball cricket, to which he responded,

“Don’t know about that but Ashwin and Jadeja are doing a very good job for the Indian team currently. Both are high-quality spin bowlers. The third spinner is also Axar Patel, he has done extremely well whenever he has got an opportunity.”

Kumble finished by stating that Kuldeep Yadav must be considered for Test cricket, citing his outstanding record in the format,

“As I said, Kuldeep Yadav should also be kept alongside them and played whenever you get a chance. He has picked up 34 wickets in eight matches and his average is also very good. He has picked up three five-wicket hauls in just eight matches. That’s an amazing record.”

In spin-friendly circumstances, the Indian recruiters and management of the team have a tendency to favour Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, and Axar Patel over Kuldeep. Their combination has also tipped the balance in their favor. Because of their capacity to score critical runs with the bat.
