On the last day of the highly acclaimed Khelo India School Games Haryana Girl Kirti displayed a dramatic comeback in the recurve finals, while K. Venkatadri of Andhra Pradesh won the compound event Archery gold in a tensely contested finals.
Haryana’s Kirti wins Archery Gold defeats her sister
Haryana grabbed the lion’s share of medals as the Archery competition at the Khelo India School Games on the final day of competition. The four gold medals on offer during the Khelo India School Games saw contests in Compound and Recurve for Boys and Girls were shared by Haryana, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh and Punjab.
All four sets of medals were decided on the final day. Overall, Haryana emerged with the best haul of five medals, including one gold, two silver and two bronze medals.
The girls Recurve finals turned out to be a cliffhanger as sisters Himani and Kirti from Haryana battled it out. Himani, who has also qualified for the Youth Olympics, looked well on course to claim gold, but a late surge by Kirti helped her level the scores at five sets each.
With the tie heading into the single arrow shootout, Kirti shot a nine, leaving Himani to better the score for gold. But Himani managed only a nine, which meant the gold went to her sister Kirti. Jharkhand’s Reeta Sawaiyan claimed bronze.
Venkatadri of Andhra wins Archery Gold in the boys section
In the boys’ Compound event, K. Venkatadri of Andhra Pradesh won gold in a tense contest against Haryana’s Harsh Parashar. With both the archers finishing with an identical score of 139 points, the fate of the gold medal was decided by a single arrow.
In a battle of nerves, the Andhra archer fared better to shoot a perfect 10, while Harsh could manage only a nine. Haryana’s Mayank Rawat claimed bronze.
Isha Ketan Pawar of Maharashtra, who dominated the girls’ Compound event right from the qualification round, won gold by beating Babita Kumari of Jharkhand 133-130. Suchitra Tourangbam from Manipur clinched bronze to round off the top three.
The boys Recurve event final, too, saw a dominant performance. Vinayak Verma of Punjab regularly drilled 10s to win the six sets against Maharashtra’s Sumedh V. Mohod in under 15 minutes. Akash of Haryana, who failed to make the final but, will be representing India in the Youth Olympics later this year, claimed bronze.
