Harmanpreet Kaur, Smriti Mandhana Come out in Ramesh Powar’s Support

2 min read

Days after Mithali Raj opened a scathing attack on Ramesh Powar through Twitter, the fiasco has taken a new shape now that Harmanpreet Kaur and Smriti Mandhana have come out in support of the former Indian off-spinner.

This comes high on the heels of Powar’s tenure as the head coach of the women’s team ending last Friday.

The two cricketers’ views were made public after their emails to the two Supreme Court-appointed Administrators of the Board and the three office-bearers were leaked.
In the separate emails, both Kaur and Mandhana have exposed Mithali Raj as a troublemaker in the squad with minimal concern for the overall team spirit.

Mithali, who’d been brutal in hurling brave accusations at Ramesh Powar and the Administrator, Diana Edulji, has now cut a sorry figure.

On the other hand, Ramesh Powar appears to be the clear winner here. Harmanpreet has specifically appealed regarding his impacts on the squad and that his services be continued. Smriti, more or less, has reflected upon the same thing.

Both the player’s emails were sent to Administrators Vinod Rai and Diana Edulji along with, acting secretary Amitabh Choudhary, Board’s acting president Chandra Kishore Khanna, and the treasurer — Anirudh Chaudhry. Copies were marked to other members too.
On one side while Kaur made a ‘humble request’ (her subject line), Smriti preferred to use the phrase ‘Sincere Plea.’

Irrespective of the subject line, the message that was delivered was very much clear.
Powar had a huge, positive impact on the on the team. Mithali did not agree with this.
Powar and Diana may not have been seeking to tarnish Mithali’s career since the decisions on the starting XI during the 2018 World T20 were not taken unilaterally by the head coach. In fact, all the decisions were unanimous.

Also, Mithali and Powar should resolve their issues, if any, face to face keeping the larger picture in mind.

By saying so, both Kaur and Mandhana have made their points clear at a time when the Board is seeking applications for the now vacant head coach’s position. It will be interesting to see how things shape up from here, as both these are one of India’s best batswoman and in their prime.

Whatever happens from here, one thing that positively emanates from this episode is the support that the head coach enjoys. Last year, a similar situation had evolved when India’s legendary spinner and the then head coach, Anil Kumble and received absolutely no support. Then, Kumble was expelled unanimously after having a feud captain Virat Kohli.
