The transaction will involve Mumbai Indians paying an all-cash amount of INR 15 crore ($1.8 million approximately) as Hardik’s salary, along with an undisclosed transfer fee to Titans. Hardik has the potential to earn up to 50% of the transfer fee.

If the trade is successfully completed, it could potentially become the largest player trade in the history of the IPL. However, neither franchise has made any public statements regarding the trade at this time.

Mumbai Indians face a significant challenge in ensuring they have sufficient funds for the trade. Following the previous auction, Mumbai had a mere INR 0.05 crore ($6000 approximately) remaining in their purse. Franchises will receive an additional INR 5 crore ($600,000 approximately) in their purse for the upcoming auction. This implies that Mumbai will need to release player(s) in order to finalize the trade for Hardik. The deadline for player retention is November 26 at 4pm IST.

Hardik Pandya Back to Mumbai Indians

Under the captaincy of Hardik Pandya, Gujarat Titans (GT) achieved remarkable success. They won the title in their inaugural season in the IPL in 2022. Hardik himself was recognized as the Player of the Match in the final against Rajasthan Royals. Continuing their impressive performance, the Titans reached the IPL final for the second consecutive year in 2023, finishing as runners-up to Chennai Super Kings. Throughout both seasons, under Hardik’s leadership, the Titans consistently topped the points table during the league stage.

Hardik Pandya will join the ranks of the few captains who have been traded in the IPL. This includes R Ashwin’s move from Punjab Kings to Delhi Capitals and Ajinkya Rahane‘s transfer from Rajasthan Royals to Capitals, both occurring in 2020.
