In Jakarta Asian Games, the Indian contingent ended a 60-year wait for a table tennis medal. Surpassing all expectations, they won bronze in the men’s team and mixed doubles categories.
The Table Tennis Federation of India’s senior selection committee has announced a 10-member squad, consisting of five men and five women, for the upcoming 26th Asian Championships in Pyeongchang, Korea, as well as the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou, China.
The Asian Championships will be held from September 3 to 10, while the Asian Games are scheduled between September 23 and October 2.
Leading the men’s team will be Sharath. He will be accompanied by G Sathiyan, Harmeet Desai, Manav Thakkar, and Manush Shah. Manika will guide a young women’s team comprising Sreeja Akula, Sutirtha Mukherjee, Ayhika Mukherjee, and Diya Chitale.
As per the restrictions on entries for the Asian Games, only two singles players per gender are allowed. The selected players for the singles events are Sharath, Sathiyan, Manika, and Sreeja, based on their reputation, experience, and world ranking points.
However, in the Asian Championships, all players, both men and women, are eligible to participate in the singles events.
During the Hangzhou Asian Games, Sharath will compete only in the men’s doubles alongside Sathiyan, while Manika will participate in the mixed doubles with Sathiyan. The second men’s doubles team will consist of Manush Shah and Manav Thakkar.
For the women’s doubles, Ayhika and Sutirtha have been selected as a pair after their impressive victory in Tunis, and Sreeja and Diya will form the second duo. Harmeet will partner with Sreeja in the second mixed doubles event.
