Grandmaster D Gukesh experienced disappointment in the ultimate tie-breaker against China’s Wei Yi, settling for a shared second-place finish at the Tata Steel Masters chess tournament. Meanwhile, Indian Grandmaster Leon Luke Mendonca emerged victorious in the challengers section, overcoming compatriot Divya Deshmukh in the 13th and final round. Gukesh faced a demanding day, securing a victory in the 13th round with the black pieces against Iran’s Parham Maghsoodloo.

Subsequently, he showed superiority in three tie-break games against last year’s champion, Anish Giri, to secure a spot in the final. Although Gukesh entertained hopes of winning the Tata Steel Chess Tournament, Wei Yi proved to be the stronger in the return game after a drawn initial encounter. While Gukesh experienced a heartbreak, Mendonca remained relatively inconspicuous throughout the event, competing alongside established figures. Mendonca’s triumph over Divya in a complex game, where the outcome could have swung either way, was influenced by Divya’s initial mistake in the middle game.
