Govt Greenlights Foreign Training for Olympian Sailors Ahead of Asian Games

In a bid to prepare for the upcoming Hangzhou Asian Games, Indian sailors Nethra Kumanan, Vishnu Saravanan, Varun Thakkar, and KC Ganapathy are set to undergo training and participate in competitions at international venues until September. This was decided after the Sports Ministry approved the proposal of the 4 Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS) sailors to commence their foreign training and participation in competitions from May to September.

According to the Ministry’s statement, the anticipated total cost for the 4 sailors, including expenses for foreign coaches and equipment for Nethra, Varun, and Ganapathy, is around Rs 1.50 crore.

Until September, Nethra will undergo training in Gran Canaria, Spain, and will also head to Keil, Germany for Kiel Week, Marseille, France for the Olympic Test Event, and Scheveningen, Netherlands for the World Sailing Championship.

On the other hand, Vishnu will be training and competing at multiple venues (Valencia, Milan, Dublin, The Hague, Croatia and Mumbai) in the coming months. Before heading to Hangzhou, China for the Asian Games (September 23 to October 8), he is set to compete in the EurILCA Europa Cup, ILCA Open Asian Championship, Marseille Olympic Test Event, and World Championship (Olympic qualifiers).

Varun and Ganapathy, as a team, have an eventful schedule ahead. They will train and compete in Keil, Germany (Kiel Week), France (Olympics Test Event), The Hague (World Championship), and China.
