Google Search 2018: India’s top 10 Searched Sports Events this Year

Google on Wednesday released its ‘Year in Search 2018’ report to list down all the significant search queries that took place in India. In the top 10 overall list, sporting events and entertainment were the top topics that dominated search queries.

Every year, Google releases a list of all the topics that were trending cross all genres. For 2018, the list of Google Search trends continues, consisting of all important as well as viral events that kept India searching on the world’s most popular search engine.

Coming to Google Search terms, Football has gained a significant amount of attention this year, challenging India’s favourite sport Cricket. Search terms related to FIFA World Cup 2018 topped the charts, even higher than the IPL season early this year.

The World Cup was actually the biggest search trend of the year worldwide.

It was followed by another cricket event – Asia Cup 2018. Indian sports fans also followed Asian Games and CWG 2018 with interest with these event coming at No. 4 and 6 respectively. Surprisingly, Winter Olympics were the 5th most searched event for India in 2018.

Indian fans also showed their interest in premier Tennis events with Wimbledon (7) and Australian Open (10) being part of the top trends.

Two domestic sports leagues- The Pro Kabaddi 2018 in Kabaddi and Indian Super League in football were the 8th and 9th most searched sports event by Indian users in 2018.

4) Asian Games 2018

5) Winter Olympics

6) Commonwealth 2018

7) Wimbledon 2018

8) Pro Kabaddi 2018

YouTube and WhatsApp dominated the list of highly trending apps in 2018. Other topics that were trending highly on Google Search included the world’s largest statue, the Statue of Unity, unveiled in Gujarat earlier this year. Several news topics that shook the society out of its slumber such as case surrounding Section 377, the Union budget, Bitcoin and the Nipah virus, were some popular search trends on Google.
